Brooks Bandits welcome new head coach
The Brooks Bandits have made some changes to their operations staff.
Late last month, the BCHL club announced that Dakota Mason had been promoted to head coach. He is replacing Ryan Papaioannou, who accepted a position as head coach of the ECHL's Wheeling Nailers, which serves as a farm team for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Mason is now joined alongside Keven Sajinovic and Cole McCaig as assistant coaches.

Single-game tickets are on sale now, as the highly anticipated home opener is set for Sept. 20 at Temple Gardens Centre. A pre-game tailgate party will be held just outside the arena before doors open.
Weyburn football teams pick up wins on the weekend
It was a busy weekend of football, with the WCS Eagles playing under the lights at home Friday, and the U14 Young Fellow Falcons in Estevan Saturday.
Friday night, the Eagles would face the Yorkton Raiders at Brent Allin Field. There, they came away with a 13-11 win to improve to 1-1 on the season.
From the 2026 Winter Games & beyond: Alex Clarke is training for life
Weyburn's Alex Clarke is training for a performance peak in February, when she will be working as a Hockey Official refereeing at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano-Cortina. However, she said she just resumed her ice time last week.
"I try to stay off the ice in the summertime, just because you get burnt out from nine months on the ice, but [I did] a lot of off-ice conditioning, a lot of fun things with the kids, just to mentally reset."
High stakes bull riding takes over Kindersley
After its debut in 2024, the second annual PBR Canada Energy Dodge Dakota Buttar Invitational in Kindersley presented double the fun, and even higher stakes this past weekend with two nights of action inside the West Central Events Centre.
The Eatonia native and event namesake Buttar overcame getting bucked off Friday for a spectacular performance on Saturday — all part of a very important weekend in the PBR Canada standings as second place rider Jake Gardner moved within 1.5 points of Buttar for first place.
Tough start to the season for Estevan football teams
Estevan minor football teams were busy this past weekend, hitting the field for both road games and home matchups.
The ECS Elecs opened their season in Moose Jaw, facing a tough challenge against the Central Cyclones and falling 60–8.
Back home, Estevan hosted a Highway 39 doubleheader against Weyburn. The U12 Ravens dominated the Chargers, shutting them out 47–0, while the U14 Falcons blanked the Oilers 46–0.
Red Wings take preseason game in Melville
The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings picked up their first win of the preseason Saturday night, as they skated to a 5-4 win in a shootout over the Millionaires in Melville.
Weyburn runners with strong showing at QCM in Regina
It was a solid performance by Weyburn runners at the Queen City Marathon in Regina on Sunday.
Terra Jacobsen led the way for the contingent, finishing first in her age category for the 10k race. She finished with a time of 49:36. Twila Walkeden also ran in the 10k and finished in a time of 59:44.
Broncos double down on preseason victories against Warman
The Humboldt Broncos swept the weekend preseason home-and-home set with the Warman Wolverines.
On Saturday, the Broncos defeated the Wolverines 6-4. Jacob Strizzi led the way with a hat-trick.
Avery Lowe, Jacob Kulas, and Carson Croteau also scored.
Nick Kotai made 27 saves as he logged in the full 60 minutes in the crease.
Humboldt was 1/5 on the power play.
Warman outshot the Broncos 31-27.
The Broncos got the road win in Warman on Friday night 4-2.
Rylan Hue scored a pair of goals.
Sports Round-Up: Monday, September 8
They got the pre-season off to a great start! The Moose Jaw Warriors won both of their games against Swift Current on the weekend. Friday, the Warriors shutout the Broncos 2-0 and then took a 2-1 overtime victory Saturday night in Assiniboia. Goalie Josh Banini stopped 43 of 44 shots he faced and was named the game's first star. Connor Schmidt scored the winning goal. The Warriors will play the Pats, in Regina, tomorrow night.
