What's next for the former Airdrie RCMP detachment site? Council has its say

Airdrie City Council will not proceed with a proposed Land Use Bylaw amendment to facilitate the redevelopment of a vacant parcel along Edmonton Trail Southeast. The RCMP once utilized the site as their detachment, but it has been vacant since 2015. Instead, the council tabled the proposed bylaw amendment to return to the council in several months, possibly in December. 

The decision was based on significant concerns from community residents and many questions from council members; one of the more prevalent concerns was parking issues.

The Moose Jaw Warriors making some roster moves in preparation for the regular season which starts this weekend.

The Warriors re-assigned 16-year-old forwards Carson Deichert and Tyson Schamehorn to their respective U18 clubs.
Deichert, a third round pick in the 2023 WHL Prospects Draft, will join the Moose Jaw U18 AAA Warriors.

The Warriors now have 13 forwards, eight defencemen and three goaltenders on the roster, including four players away at NHL training camps.

The Brandon Wheat Kings have dealt 18-year-old defenceman Seth Tansem to the Wenatchee Wild for a 6th round pick in the 2027 WHL Draft. Tansem had three assists and was a +2 in 44 games with the Wheat Kings last season. A former second round pick of the Prince Albert Raiders in 2021, he was acquired by the Wheat Kings in October of 2023 for a 4th round pick in the 2025 WHL Draft.

The South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League will operate with 10 teams when season 73 begins next month. The two-time defending champion Ste. Anne Aces, Ile des Chenes Northstars, Red River Wild, Morden Bombers, Winkler Royals, Carman Beavers, Notre Dame Hawks, Portage Islanders, Warren Mercs and Springfield Winterhawks confirmed their status for the 2024-25 season at the league's fall meeting Tuesday night in Carman. The Winterhawks application to join the league was accepted in late May.

Tiger Hills Hockey League shrinks as three longtime franchises take leave

The Tiger Hills Hockey League will operate with 13 teams this upcoming season and a long-standing franchise in the area will not be one of them. The Gladstone Lakers confirmed they would take a one-year leave of absence at the league's fall meeting Monday night in Wawanesa. Two other league mainstays will do the same, the Pilot Mound Pilots and Wawanesa Jets.

Players who suited up for Gladstone in the past who still want to play will be free to join any team that would want them and geographically, MacGregor and Neepawa would logically be two good options.

Volunteers still needed for 2024 Pan Continental Curling Championships

Organizers for the 2024 Pan Continental Curling Championships are still looking for volunteers.

Co-Chair Gail Perepelkin was busy signing people up last week at the Lacombe Fall Active Living Fair.

"We're looking at people volunteering for at least four draws," she said. "The time commitment would be about four hours a day."

Perepelkin says they need a total of about 200 volunteers. They are currently sitting at about 160. 

Maroons take leave of absence from SEMHL ending team’s 72-year run

The Altona Maroons, a charter member of the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League, will not put a team on the ice for the upcoming 2024-25 season.

It became official Tuesday night at the league’s fall meeting in Carman.

SEMHL commissioner Tom Vatrt informed the league executive and the 10 other teams that due to a lack of players, the Maroons would not be able to compete in season 73.

The team will take a one-year leave of absence, ending a streak of 72 years of senior hockey in Altona.
