Blue Bombers announce team nominees for CFL's Most Outstanding Player Awards

The Canadian Football League (CFL) has revealed the Winnipeg Blue Bombers' six nominees for the 2024 Most Outstanding Player Awards, as selected by the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) and CFL head coaches.

Brady Oliveira leads nominations with dual honours

Winnipeg native and standout running back Brady Oliveira has once again been named the Blue Bombers' nominee for both Most Outstanding Player (MOP) and Most Outstanding Canadian (MOC).

Southeast Saskatchewan braces for exciting senior hockey season

The start of the season for the senior hockey leagues in the Southeast is right around the corner. One league will start this coming weekend, and the other two the weekend after.  

The Big Six Hockey League will be the first out of the gate this year, albeit with just eight teams this season instead of nine, as the Bienfait Coalers will not be fielding a team this season.  

Sports Round-Up: Thursday, October 24

Two Moose Jaw Warriors are on NHL Central Scouting’s Preliminary Players to Watch List, including Lynden Lakovic and Connor Schmidt. Lakovic was one of six players from the Western Hockey League to receive an ‘A’ rating as a potential first-round candidate.

The Warriors have made their way to BC for a 5-game road trip. First up, they’ll play Kelowna Rockets tomorrow night. Voice of the Warriors James Gallo will have the call, starting with the pre-game show at 7:40 on Country 100.

Sports Update - Thursday, October 24th

Josh Romanik had a four-point night with three goals and an assist as the Vincent Massey Vikings defeated the Neepawa Tigers 6-2 at the Yellowhead Centre. Joey Leblanc, Lucas Newman and Addax Egan also scored for the defending Westman High School Hockey League champions who improved to 6-0 on the season. Cohen Kulbacki and Zach Plett did the goal scoring for the Tigers. 

Sports Update - Thursday, October 24th

Steinbach Regional dropped a 41-21 decision to the Vincent Massey Vikings Wednesday afternoon in Brandon. SRSS quarterback Arkin Padron threw two touchdown passes to Owen Medeiros and Pavel Tsialipka ran for a 28-yard major. Massey led 21-14 at the half and 35-21 after three quarters. The Sabres finished the regular season schedule with a 4-2 record and will head into the Winnipeg High School Football League JV9 playoffs as the third seed. Steinbach Regional will face the Vikings in the semifinals next week. 

Sports Update - Thursday, October 24th

Three Manitobans will wear the Maple Leaf with Canada’s National Women’s Hockey Team for the first three games of the 2024-25 Rivalry Series, starting November 6th in San Jose, California. Goaltender Kristen Campbell of Brandon and defenders Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. Anne and Ashton Bell of Deloraine are on Team Canada's 25-player roster. All three helped Canada win its 13th gold medal at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship. Canada has won the Rivalry Series in back-to-back seasons, winning the final four games in 2023 and 2024 to secure victory in seven games.

Foothills Bantam Eagles set for Division 1 playoff debut

The Foothills Bantam Eagles are set to play in their first-ever Division 1 playoff showdown this weekend.

The Eagles are set to play the Calgary Colts at Shouldice Artificial Turf Hellard on Saturday (Oct. 26) at 4:00 p.m. for the first-round game.

The Foothills-based team put up a 6-2 record this season and outscored their opponents 322-127 in the process. The Colts are coming off of an undefeated season and they outscored their opponents 286-46 this season.

Local athletes win provincial awards in track & field

Two southwest athletes and a local coach received significant awards at the Saskatchewan Athletics annual awards banquet this past weekend.

Swift Current's Kyler Duclos was recognized for his performance in the long jump, triple jump, and the 100-meter sprint, securing him U16 Male Track Athlete of the Year as well as Male Field Athlete of the Year.

Olivia Dyrland from the Town of Kyle was awarded U16 Female Field Athlete of the Year for her performance in discus. 

Watrous Wildcats begin football provincial championship chase in Southey

Provincial playoffs begin on Saturday in high school football across the province.  

The Watrous Wildcats will be on the road as they look to add another provincial championship banner, when they head to Southey. 

It was a second-place finish in 2024 for the Wildcats. Both of their losses in the regular season came at the hands of the Clavet Cougars.  

Kadon McCann is on the radar of NHL scouts

Cochrane hockey player Kadon McCann has been named to the NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary players to watch list ahead of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

The 17-year-old centre is listed as a C-rated players who is so far projected as fourth or fifth-round pick in the NHL draft next June. 

The 6'3" 200 lb. centre is in his second full season with the Medicine Hat Tigers and one of two players being watched from the WHL team. He played 68 regular season and five playoff games with the Tigers last season and is 10 games into the current one.
