Canada Summer Games Recap: Saskatchewan advances to semifinals in Men's Baseball

Team Saskatchewan’s Men’s Baseball team is one win away from earning a medal at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland.  

On Wednesday, Saskatchewan defeated Quebec 8-7 in a thrilling contest.  

After being tied 6-6 following the 7th inning, Quebec scored a run in the top of the 8th to move ahead.  

Okotoks Stingrays make waves at Alberta Swim Association provincials

The Okotoks Stingrays Summer Swim Club capped its season with a standout performance at the Alberta Summer Swim Association provincials in Edmonton earlier this month.

Eighteen swimmers qualified for provincials, four more than last year, and Club president Rachel Thompson said the team’s success was evident both provincially and at the regional level.

Canada Summer Games Wednesday Update

BASEBALL

Shaunavon's Mason Fauser got the win in relief as Team Saskatchewan qualified for the semifinals of the baseball tournament with an 8-7 extra innings win over Quebec.

Fauser came on in relief in the bottom of the 8th with his team trailing 7-6 and induced an inning-ending double play.

Saskatchewan then came from behind to win the game thanks to a walk-off base hit by Josh Gutek.

Former Swift Current resident Aiden Kilshaw was 1 for 4 and twice hit by pitches for Saskatchewan.

Berries squeezed out of playoffs by Red Sox

The Saskatoon Berries ran out of juice on Tuesday night as their season came to an end with a 6-2 loss to Regina Red Sox in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) East Final.  

Regina claimed the best of three series 2-1.  

Muenster’s Merek Yeager got the start in the crucial matchup, he ended up taking the loss. Yeager pitched four innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He also had three strikeouts.  

Cochrane athletes shine at Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships in Wales

Five Cochrane athletes from the Cochrane Water Ninjas were part of Team Canada’s strong showing at the 2025 RLSS Commonwealth Lifesaving Championships.

The three-day event, held July 10–13 in Swansea, Wales, wrapped up with the Canadian development team earning six bronze medals — four in individual events and two in women’s relay races. Water Ninjas played a role in three of the medals.

Moose Jaw athletes heading to playoff rounds at summer games

Moose Jaw athletes have advanced to the playoff rounds in women’s box lacrosse and women’s softball at the Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, N.L. 

On Tuesday, Saskatchewan’s women’s softball team picked up an 11-4 win over P.E.I. Moose Jaw’s Blake Maltais played right field and went two-for-four at the plate with four runs batted in. 

Rebels name quarter-century team

The Red Deer Rebels have announced their Quarter-Century Team, celebrating the top 20 players to wear Rebels colours from 2000 to 2025.

The roster was selected through nearly 400 online ballots cast by fans earlier this month.

Forwards: Arshdeep Bains, Ben King, Brandon Hagel, Brandon Sutter, Colby Armstrong, Colin Fraser, Jake DeBrusk, Justin Mapletoft, Kai Uchacz, Martin Erat, Martin Hanzal, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Defence: Alexander Alexeyev, Alexander Petrovic, Dion Phaneuf, Haydn Fleury, Jim Vandermeer, Matt Dumba.

Moon, Schenher score two goals each in Canada Games win

Athletes from the Weyburn area were instrumental in leading Team Saskatchewan's women's box lacrosse team to a 10-1 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador on Tuesday at the Canada Summer Games. 

Weyburn's Ella Schenher and Maci Patterson, alongside Hunter Moon of Riceton, had a hand in nearly half of the team's ten goals. The trio combined for four goals and five assists in the dominant performance. 

Sylvan Lake Gulls to face Regina in Championship Series

The Sylvan Lake Gulls are heading to the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) Final for the first time in franchise history after clinching the Western Conference title.

They’ll face the Regina Red Sox, who beat the Saskatoon Berries for the Eastern Conference title.

The Gulls earned home field advantage with a stronger regular season record, but due to the distance between the two cities, both teams agreed that Regina will host Game 1 for the best-of-three championship series.

Game 1 is set for Thursday, August 14, in Regina at 7:05 p.m.
