Red Deer motel charged $40,000 for safety violations
A Red Deer motel has been charged with multiple safety code violations.
Between June 2023 and January 2024, Emergency Services Fire Safety Codes Officers conducted five inspections of the building.
Numerous inspections were not complied with, and Safety Codes Act Orders were issued to the owner, resulting in $40,000 in fines.
Calgary mayor says city considering replacing water pipe that ruptured
Calgary's mayor says the city is considering ways to strengthen a key water main for the long term, including replacing it altogether.
Jyoti Gondek says in the spring the city could add a liner or a sleeve to the pipe to strengthen it, or dig alongside it and built an entirely new one.
The pipe in northwest Calgary ruptured in early June, drenching a stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway and nearby parkland.
The break forced Calgarians to undertake a series of water conservation measures, from not watering lawns to taking shorter showers.

Students who have been hunting for a summer job and recent immigrants looking for work have felt the brunt of the country's weakening labour market, Statistics Canada's latest employment report shows.
The federal agency’s July labour force survey released on Friday says the overall jobless rate held steady at 6.4 per cent last month as the economy shed a modest 2,800 jobs.
The employment rate, which measures the share of the population aged 15 and older that is employed, fell slightly as fewer people looked for work.

Red Deer council approves Kinsmen Community Arenas repair
Red Deer City Council approved a $350,000 budget request to replace the chiller at the Kinsmen Community Arenas.
The project will be funded through the Capital Projects Reserve.
The part is expected to arrive in 14 weeks and will take two weeks to install. Ice will then be installed, taking an additional 10 days.

Embassy staff are expected to remain in Israel.

Extended road closure along 57 Street starts today
The City of Red Deer is advising motorists of an extended traffic disruption along 57 Street as crews repair water service infrastructure.
From Aug. 8 to Sept. 21, 57 Street will be closed from Kerry Wood Drive to 60 Avenue.
Traffic will be detoured along 55 Street and 58A Street.
Rebels name new Director of Player Personnel
The Red Deer Rebels have named Jamie Novakoski as the club’s new Director of Player Personnel.
Novakoski worked with the Kamloops Blazers from 1995 to 2007, and the Edmonton Oil Kings where he worked since their inaugural season in 2007 as both a Scout and Director of Scouting.
He helped build Oil Kings clubs that won three Western Hockey League (WHL) titles in 2012, 2014, and 2022, and a Memorial Cup championship in 2014.
