Penner's win confirmed after recount

It may have taken a few extra hours to become official, but Ed Penner is in fact the new councillor for Ward Four in the Rural Municipality of Hanover.

After the final votes had been tallied Wednesday night, Penner came out on top of incumbent Councillor John Giesbrecht by a count of 319 to 279.

Hanover Senior Election Official Lois Gresiuk informed us Thursday morning that Giesbrecht had asked for a recount because of the narrow margin of victory. That recount was completed Thursday afternoon.

Kreklewich thrilled to have four more years

The voters in Oakland-Wawanesa went to the polls on Wednesday and had some choices to make.

Reeve Dave Kreklewich was being challenged by former councilor Dennis Rome and the incumbent came out on top collecting 529 votes to Rome’s 370. “It’s a big win as far as keeping the municipality on the right track. We’ve done some great work over the past four years and want to see it continue. We’ve got a lot of returning councilors and it brings stability and at the same time lets people know we want to do the right thing.”

"I think they spoke fairly clearly the way forward is to rebuild relationships," says new Winkler Mayor

"The biggest thing I can say is I'm extremely relieved," said new City of Winkler Mayor Henry Siemens in a late night interview after the unofficial results of the municipal election were announced. "I was hoping the message would be clear, and the community wanted to reconcile and to rebuild and to move forward. I think, from what I see here, that's fairly consistent with that. Job one is going to be to move forward."

Funk victorious in Hanover

For the first time since 2006, the Rural Municipality of Hanover has a new Reeve.

Jim Funk was victorious over Don Bouchard in Wednesday's election. Funk claimed 1,949 votes compared to Bouchard's 551.

Funk, who says he likes the sound of "Reeve Funk," admits he could sense that support while on the campaign trail.

"There was a sense that I felt that I would have the support even though they did not mention a yea or nay to me," says Funk. "But deep down I felt that there was support there."

For the Portage School Division, Gregg Waldvogel, Tracey Asham, Rhonda Mccutcheon, Shauna-Lei Leslie, and Donald Smoke were selected in Ward 1, the City of Portage.
