Southeastern Manitobans invited to join national nature challenge

Whether a biologist, bird-lover, or someone who just wants to get outside, a national contest is inviting Canadians to connect with nature—right from their own backyards.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada's (NCC) Big Backyard BioBlitz has returned for its fifth year, and is asking southeastern Manitobans to photograph different plants and animals, and share their findings online.

Participants can do so via the iNaturalist app, which not only works for uploading pictures and audio recordings of birds and plants, but for "downloading" new information to curious minds.

Celebrate Summer - Sunrise & Sunsets

Week 3 of our Celebrate Summer photo contest brought us some beautiful photos of sunrises and sunsets around the province and beyond. Congratulations to Brandon Slade whose breathtaking photo of harvesting during a sunset took our top prize.

Thanks to everyone who participated with their own photos. Coming up for week 4 we are focusing on wildlife! Whether it's a small action shot of a squirrel or a pack of deer relaxing in a field. Submit your photos for a chance to win a prize and be featured in next week's gallery!

Blast from the past: Heritage Threshing Days return to Midale

The Souris Valley Antique Association (SVAA) is preparing for the 59th Annual Heritage Threshing Days in Midale, taking place this long weekend.

President of the SVAA Glenn McGregor says the weekend will feature events attendees look forward to every year, including the Threshermen’s Parade and live threshing demonstration, with the addition of some new buildings to the Heritage Village as well.

“We have a few new additions in there this year that we're working on. They're not all going to be ready, but we're definitely working towards getting them there.”

Meet the July Perfect Pet contestants!

July brought a beautiful mix of sunshine, heat, and those classic summer storms—but no matter the weather, pet lovers across Estevan kept the entries coming!

This month’s contest brought in a fantastic mix of furry (and not-so-furry) friends. We had playful pups, cool cats, a hamster named Tony, and even a goat named Winnie—all showing off their charm for a shot at the title of July’s Perfect Pet.

Carnie's Comments - No Vote for You!

Carnie's Comments

Think back to when you were 16 years of age. Were you politically engaged? Would you have voted in elections if you had been eligible?

I'm asking those questions today as the United Kingdom works on a plan that will allow 16-year-olds to vote in their next general election.

Manitoba senator Marilou McPhedran is pushing for the same in Canada, but we found folks on the prairies are not in favour.

From trees to boats: your pets’ favourite summer spots

For our latest Country 107 Pet of the Day Contest, powered by our friends at LR Horse and Pet, we asked:
Cottage, camper, or backyard — where’s your pet’s summer hangout?

And wow — your pets did not disappoint. From beach bums to deck dwellers, these furry (and sometimes sun-soaked) companions are soaking up every last drop of summer.

Meals on the Farm returns to celebrate local farmers

Meals on the Farm, presented by Steinbach Credit Union, is back again this summer, continuing a cherished tradition of bringing hot meals to hardworking farmers.

Whether it’s planting, harvesting, feeding livestock, or fixing machinery at the crack of dawn, farmers are working around the clock, often through weekends, holidays, and extreme weather.

That’s where Meals on the Farm comes in. We are bringing a meal from the Mennonite Heritage Village right to the field, barn, or machine shed, as our way of saying thank you to the farmers who work so hard.
