Government wraps up Highway 16 passing lanes project
The Province of Saskatchewan announced that the finishing touches have been put on the Highway 16 improvement project. The final set of passing lanes are now open near the eastern Saskatchewan community of Saltcoats, marking the wrap up of the multi-year project.
Sunshine sparks the 17th annual Bruno Show and Shine
The Bruno Show and Shine has had an exceptional run of sunny, summertime weather over its 17 year run. With only one certified rain out, the annual celebration of all things automotive has built a legacy of crowd-pleasing entertainment under the clear prairie skies. Such was the case on Sunday, when denizens of the region gathered again to marvel at the collector's edition cars, bikes, trucks, and the multitude of tractors on the Bruno Sports Grounds.
Fast moving thunderstorms bring hail, strong winds
A line of fast-moving thunderstorms tracked across the Humboldt area last night. Strong winds moved into many regions in the early evening followed by patchy areas of heavy rain. Loonie sized hail was reported in Humboldt.
To the north, a strong cell tracked through delivering short bursts of torrential rain, some hail and similarly strong winds. Environment Canada issued thunderstorm watches in the afternoon, and then warnings as the disturbances developed.
History comes to life with Three Lakes Heritage Festival
Memories of yesteryear came to life in Middle Lake, with the first ever Three Lakes Heritage Festival that took place on Saturday. The Community Cultural Hub served as the anchor for displays and activities throughout the day.
“We’ve been really pleased with people stepping up and giving us a hand setting up tents and hauling chairs,” said Dori Cooke with the organizational committee. “We were able to finish our displays last night and so we’re relaxing today and enjoying it all.”
East Central 18UAAA Red Sox capture provincial championship
The East Central 18U AAA Red Sox are your 2023 provincial champions. The team wrapped up a stellar season in the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League taking the final game 6-3 over the Regina Wolfpack.
The provincial tournament kicked off for the Red Sox on Friday with a solid 11-1 win over the Regina Athletics. The Red Sox dispatched the Sask Five Giants 122-2 and the South East Twins 9-4 on the way to the final. Their sole loss for the weekend came at the hands of the Saskatoon Cubs, but the Sox stayed the course to pick up the championship win in Sunday's final.
Gallery - Watrous Fun Run another summer hit
Main Street in Watrous was overtaken by motor enthusiasts of all ages with the return of the Watrous Fun Run. Cars from across the prairies pulled in for the day long display and the traditional run to Manitou Beach.
For some it was a step into the exotic world of international autos with classics like Ivan Johnson from Regina and his Italian Alfa Romeo sportster.
“Originally it came out of Winnipeg where a lady bought it brand new in 1075. We’ve had it for 35 years.”
UPDATE - Vehicle recovered, suspect apprehended on James Smith Cree Nation
Melfort RCMP have communicated that Keenan Crawford Head was located by police on James Smith Cree Nation on the afternoon of July 27 and arrested without incident.

Hammerheads wrap up season with Northern Finals and Provincials
The Humboldt Hammerheads took 34 swimmers to the Northern Finals last weekend in Nipawin, qualifying 30 of those participants to Provincial Finals taking place in Saskatoon July 29th & 30th in Saskatoon.
The Saskatoon Sharks are hosting Provincial Finals for the first time in their club's history, bringing 253 swimmers from 18 clubs across the province together. The clubs have spent the last 6 weeks participating in various races at different meets throughout the province to make it to this point.
NDP criticizes government handling of homeless situation as Sask Housing vacancies skyrocket
The Opposition NDP is expressing concerns about the provincial government’s handling of homelessness in cities and rural communities outside Regina and Saskatoon. The criticism, levelled by NDP Leader Carla Beck and Opposition Housing Critic Meara Conway, comes in light of documents obtained from the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation. Those documents show high vacancy rates for social housing at a time when municipalities have put out alerts about a growing homeless population.
