Connor caps hat trick with late winner to lift Jets past Ducks 3-2

Kyle Connor is starting to break out of a mini-slump. 

Connor completed his hat trick netting the game winner with 53.5 seconds remaining to give the Winnipeg Jets a 3-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday night. 

Connor, who scored 47 goals last season, converted a perfect pass from forward Mark Scheifele, snapping a shot past Ducks goaltender John Gibson for just his fifth goal this year. 

Blue Bombers head coach O'Shea named CFL's coach of the year

Another year, another coach of the year honour for Mike O'Shea of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

O'Shea claimed the award for a second straight season Thursday at the CFL awards banquet.

The native of North Bay, Ont., guided Winnipeg to a league-best 15-3 record this season and a second straight first-place finish in the West Division.

Winnipeg will cap its campaign facing the Toronto Argonauts in the Grey Cup looking for a third straight CFL title.

Toronto's Ryan Dinwiddie was the finalist.

Blue Bombers quarterback says he's ready to play in Grey Cup despite ankle injury

Winnipeg Blue Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros intends to play in Sunday's Grey Cup game against the Toronto Argonauts despite an injured ankle.

Collaros didn't practice Wednesday or Thursday in Regina, but told media "I'm ready to go. I'm ready to play."

The quarterback rolled his right ankle when he was tackled in the fourth quarter of last Sunday's West Division final win over the B.C. Lions.

"My foot just got stuck in the ground," Collaros said. "It didn't feel great on the ankle in the moment."

Update: Detour on 3rd Street North cleared

Update: The scene is now cleared. 
 

Drivers in Kenora are asked to avoid the 3rd Street North area this afternoon as crews work to repair a hydro pole.

A resident reported a power or cable line being too low to the roadway to city crews this morning, after a piece of equipment fell off of the hydro pole.

Drivers throughout the region are asked to drive with caution today, after multiple accidents have been reported on Highway 17. With more flurries in the forecast, roads are expected to be slick over the next few days.

Delays through Dryden after collision

Major traffic delays are being reported in the Dryden area after a collision near 7/11 and the Husky Fuel stations.

Drivers are reporting long lines of traffic along Highway 17 in Dryden, and residents are asked to use alternate routes at this time.

There’s no word on any injuries at this time.

This is the second major collision reported on Highway 17 today, after a fatal collision near Ignace near 12:30 a.m. Roads were closed until 10:30 a.m. or so. 

‘They’ve left us no choice’ CUPE on second strike

Leadership with the Ministry of Education and the Ontario government say they’re doing everything they can to stop education workers from striking again across the province.

This comes as members of the Canadian Union of Public Employees gave the government another 5-day notice to strike on November 16, which leaves a second protest possible for Monday, November 21.

Honouring legends: Selanne and Numminen inducted into Jets Hall of Fame

Two of the most memorable players from the Jets 1.0 were in Winnipeg last night for a special ceremony before the Jets took on the Ducks.

The Jets inducted Teemu Selanne and Teppo Numminen into their Hall of Fame in a jersey-unveiling ceremony before the puck drop.

Selanne, a.k.a. the “Finnish Flash,” scored 306 points (147 goals) in 231 games with the Jets in four seasons before being traded to Anaheim in late 1996. 

Nov. 17 Sports Update

The Kenora Under 18 AAA Thistles have another win under their belt.

They hosted the Thrashers last night at the Kenora Rec Centre, where they outscored Winnipeg 5-4. Emerson Evans scored the first goal, followed by Carson Maffey and Nikolas Fagnili each earning two goals.

The Thistles will be on the road this weekend to face off against the Brandon Wheat Kings for a 2-game series.

One dead after early morning Hwy 17 collision

Highway 17 has reopened between Dryden, Ignace and Thunder Bay after an early morning collision which took the life of one person.

The Ministry of Transportation reports that the collision occurred around 12:30 a.m near the Revell Township, west of Ignace.

Highway closures included near the Tim Hortons and Walmart in Dryden to Ignace, as well as between Ignace and Thunder Bay.

UPDATE - The Highway has reopened between Ignace and Thunder Bay, as well as between Dryden and Ignace. Residents are reminded to drive with extreme caution. 

 

Highway 17 remains closed from Dryden east to Thunder Bay (Shabaqua Corner) following an early morning incident. 

Ontario511 reports that a collision occurred around 12:30 am. Reports say that the highway is blocked off near the Tim Hortons and Walmart in Dryden.

The road later reopened between Ignace and Thunder Bay, and reopened between Dryden and Ignace around 10:30 a.m.
