After weekend of tornadoes, hail and fires, more unsettled weather on tap for Saskatchewan

After a weekend that saw Saskatchewan hammered by severe thunderstorms, hail and at least three suspected tornadoes, another unsettled stretch of prairie weather is expected to bring more rainfall and thunderstorms to the West Central region this week.

Kindersley Council meeting recap: lease agreement, financial statements, and paid accounts

The Kindersley Town Council held their Regular Meeting on Monday, June 9.

Council directed the Mayor and Chief Administrative Officer to enter into a Farmland Cash Lease Agreement with Rick Fries.

Council received the audited financial statements and supporting schedules for the year ended December 31, 2024, as prepared by CHBB. These documents were received as information and filed.

Council accepted the list of accounts paid by the Town of Kindersley, totaling $1,502,363.94.

Rain, cooler temperatures provide relief in Prairie wildfires, more evacuees go home

Rain and cooler temperatures brought relief to fire-ravaged Manitoba and Saskatchewan Monday, allowing fire bans to be reduced and more evacuees to go home.

The weather helped fire crews get an upper hand in parts of northern Manitoba to clear the way for some of the 21,000 or more evacuees to start returning home.

David Monias, chief of Pimicikamak Cree Nation, reposted video of heavy rainfall on social media along with video of small planes leaving Winnipeg with evacuees who were forced out almost three weeks earlier.

2025 CanAm Bowl in Rosetown just over 2 weeks away

Rosetown has been the Canadian training ground for the last two CanAm Bowl six-aside football championships, and for the first time in game history will be the host location for the next edition of the game coming up on July 1.

The day represents an all-star game showcase between Team Canada (players from Saskatchewan/Alberta) and Team USA (Montana, Nebraska, Wyoming, & Texas) and has been taking place since July 1997. All players must be recent high school graduates for that year and have played at least their Grade 12 year as a member of a 6-aside team.

Fundraiser game in Elrose kicking off week of senior baseball

Rain is the only thing that can hold back another week of senior baseball starting around West Central on Monday night. There are two games on the schedule for June 16, one in the Coteau Hills Baseball League and another in the Fertile Valley Baseball League.

Starting off in the CHBL, it's going to be a special game in Elrose between the U18 Wartime Marlins and Kyle Sr. Yellowjackets.  

Judge reserves decision in arson sentencing for former Macklin firefighter Logan Sieben

A sentencing decision has been reserved in the case of former Macklin volunteer firefighter Logan Sieben, who pleaded guilty to one count of arson causing property damage following a string of suspicious fires in the Macklin area in the summer of 2024.

Sieben, 25, admitted to deliberately setting several fires between July 28 and Aug. 25, 2024, targeting hay bales, grass and crops. The Crown said approximately 30 fires were part of the overall investigation, and Sieben used firelighters, flares and accelerants. His guilty plea avoided what was expected to be a two-week trial.

One minor injury in rural house fire east of Kindersley

A house fire on a rural property near D’Arcy, Sask., led to one minor injury and the loss of several animals, according to Kindersley Fire.

Crews were dispatched to the scene just after 7:30 p.m. Sunday, where a single residential structure was reported to be on fire. While all occupants had evacuated safely, initial reports indicated that multiple animals were trapped inside.

Kindersley Fire responded with multiple units and was joined on scene by EMS, RCMP, SaskPower, and SaskEnergy.

One individual sustained minor injuries and was treated on scene by EMS.

Violent offenders sought in West-Central Sask.: RCMP most wanted list June

The Saskatchewan RCMP has released its updated Most Wanted list, highlighting offenders across the province considered to pose a significant threat to public safety — including several individuals with ties to west-central communities.

The list, updated monthly based on the Crime Severity Index, includes individuals with active warrants whose last known locations span from Swift Current and Cabri to North Battleford and Rosetown.

Radio stations raise more than $680K in Saskatchewan wildfire relief effort

Radio stations and media outlets across Saskatchewan came together last week in a show of unprecedented solidarity, raising more than $680,000 to support wildfire evacuees during the first-ever Saskatchewan Day of Caring for Wildfire Evacuees.

The province-wide radiothon aired June 12 across more than 60 stations and digital platforms, collecting $680,345 in donations for the Canadian Red Cross 2025 Saskatchewan Wildfires Appeal. That total is expected to climb, as donations continue to come in.
