Spirits are high for Sask. Distillers as support for local products grows

While Saskatchewan hasn’t joined other provinces in pulling American alcohol brands off the shelves, the push to buy Canadian is just as strong here as it is across the nation. 

Trade tensions are causing no small amount of concern, but the growing support for local products has presented an opportunity for the province’s craft -brewing and -distilling industry to showcase their products and expand nationally.  

Lampman Fire and Rescue receives $50K boost for hall renovations, truck repairs

Lampman Fire and Rescue received a $50,000 donation from Kingston Midstream to support fire hall renovations and a fire truck pump repair project.

“A while back, we determined that the fire hall needed to be moved to a different building, and several renovations were required,” said Teresa Biller, and adminstrator with the town of Lampman. “We assessed the cost of the renovations and the pump repair, and then we began a fundraising campaign.”

Fire crews called to alarm, minor crash in Estevan

Estevan Fire Rescue responded to two calls over the past week, but neither required emergency intervention.

On Feb. 6 at about 12:30 p.m., crews were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm in the city’s northeast. Firefighters confirmed the alarm had been triggered by system maintenance, with no emergency occurring.

On Feb. 9 at about 10:25 a.m., crews responded to a two-vehicle collision in Estevan’s south end. There were no injuries or entrapments, and the vehicles sustained only minor damage.

The Funeral Mass for Deanne will be celebrated on Saturday, February 15, 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Estevan, with Rev. Chris Juchacz the Celebrant. A luncheon will follow in the parish hall, after which a private family burial will take place at the Bienfait Cemetery.

Midale pool receives $50K donation toward major upgrades

The Midale Swimming Pool has received a $50,000 donation from Kingston Midstream as it looks to undergo a major overhaul.

Midale Mayor Al Haglum said the project will be a valuable addition to the community. "A swimming pool, your rinks, your schools—everything that you can keep in your community is an asset to have,” he said.

He added that maintaining local infrastructure and amenities is key to keeping residents happy.

“You start losing those essential infrastructure pieces, and your town dies, basically. It’s very important.”

Big Six Hockey League sees teams playing in provincials, playoffs over the weekend

A busy weekend for the Big Six Hockey League as teams were on the ice for both playoffs and the provincials over the last few days.

For their playoffs, the KW Oil Kings fell 6-3 to the Moosomin Rangers, sealing the series 3-0.

The Rangers will now face off against the Carlyle Cougars in the second round, with game dates yet to be decided.

The provincials were also ongoing with the Carnduff Red Devils taking on the Canora Cobras in the SHA Senior C South Quarterfinal's second match, following a 5-2 loss last week.

Trump’s invasion threats violate international law: Canadian ambassador

The Canadian ambassador to France says threats by United States President Donald Trump to invade another country violate international law.

"I'm just saying that in order to respect international law, you don't threaten your neighbours by invasion," Stéphane Dion said.

Trump has said he wouldn’t rule out using military force to take over Greenland, which is part of Denmark. 

Trump said again Sunday that he wants to see Canada become a U.S. state after being asked about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s recent comments saying that Trump is not joking.
