Empey, McCleary & King ink new AHL deals

Two former Swift Current Broncos have signed contracts with the American Hockey League's Toronto Marlies.

Swift Current native Ryan McCleary and fellow former Bronco Ben King both signed one-year AHL deals with the Marlies.

McCleary, a defenceman, spent last season with Cincinnati in the ECHL. He put up 12 points over 69 games.

He played the final season of his four-year WHL career with the Broncos.

Sonic rained out of tournament

The Swift Current U17 Sonic had two wins and a loss when the Southeast Supernovas softball tournament in Carlyle got rained out.

They beat Estevan 14-0, the Saskatoon Selects Outlaws 12-1, and lost 6-3 to the Twin City Angels.

Swift Current led Hamiota 1-0 in the semifinal when the event got rained out.

They play a doubleheader in Moose Jaw tonight against Wood River U19 and the Moose Jaw U17A Ice. 

Evelyn Colpitts

October 13, 1935 – June 29, 2025

It is with great sadness that the family of Evelyn Colpitts announces her passing peacefully on June 29, 2025, at the age of 89.
Evelyn was born October 13, 1935, in London England. When she was a young child, her mother married a Canadian soldier, they came to Canada and first settled at Bateman, then moving to Neidpath.

Swift Current's Cassidy shines at Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament

"It was just the best thing that has ever happened to me in my whole entire life."

Swift Current's Cayson Cassidy put on a show at one of the biggest hockey tournaments in the world.

The 10-year-old led the Saskatchewan Junior Pats in points at the 2025 Brick Invitational Hockey Tournament.

Grain movement is starting to slow down

With the end of the crop year coming up on July 31st, we are starting to see a seasonal slowdownof grain movement.

CN's Assistant Vice President of Grain, David Przednowek says even with the seasonal decline, they have still registered just over half a million tonnes of grain movement per week over the past couple of weeks.

"We are seeing the demand for CN supply hopper cars for grain movement decline. You know, in the past couple of weeks we've seen orders for CN supply equipment in that 3334 car per week range. "

The memorial service for Mrs Kay Froese will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. from the Chapel of Warren’s Funeral Home in Swift Current, Saskatchewan with Pastor Patti Sherk officiating.

Winter wheat advocate set to retire

Ducks Unlimited Canada agrologist has promoted winter cereals for decades and remains hopeful about the crop’s future

Winter wheat was a big deal on the Prairies from about 2006 to 2014.

Total acreage ranged from 800,000 to 1.3 million, with the lion’s share of the crop seeded in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Ken Gross, a Ducks Unlimited Canada agrologist who has promoted winter cereals for decades, described that period as the “second wave” of winter wheat on the Prairies.

Lil Sur Mer announces new Zombie Survival Event

The Haunted Town of Lil Sur Mer is preparing for a whole new kind of horror-themed event. 

Famous for the annual Haunted Town tours they host throughout the Halloween season, the board has decided to host a new Zombie Survival Event for a single day only.

Andy Keys, board chair for the Haunted Town, says the event will be a zombie survival scavenger hunt, with no paintball elements. 

Pride Week sees tenth flag raising in Swift Current

For the tenth year, the City of Swift Current took part in the pride flag raising ceremony as a part of more than half a dozen events taking place this week to celebrate Pride Week.

Jesse Koethler, board chair for Southwest Saskatchewan Pride, shared that Pride Week officially kicked off with the flag raising at Market Square on Monday morning, followed by cookie decorating and sticker making.
