Updated - Canola Council of Canada cuts agronomy team

The move is part of the Canola Council of Canada's new strategic framework, 'Canola Forward: A Strategic Framework for 2025-2030.'

The news came in a press release announcing the new framework. Chris Davison, president & CEO, says the framework is focused on priorities identified by the Canadian canola industry and is aligned to help the industry seize emerging opportunities while navigating changing industry and trade dynamics.

Guest, Irene

We the family of Irene Guest, are saddened to announce her passing on July 29, 2025 in Weyburn, SK at the age of 92 years old. Her life was centered around her family, and she poured her heart into every moment spent caring for and supporting those she loved. She will be deeply missed by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Irene was predeceased by her husband, Earl Guest; her parents, Matilda Gertrude Slater and Joseph Alec Slater; brothers and sister: Melvin, Leonard, Albert, Dorothy, Norman; son, Dean Guest; grandchildren, Janis Guest and Michael Guest.

Celebrating local history: Heritage Village Days return to Weyburn

Weyburn is celebrating local history as Heritage Village Days return. The event-packed weekend promises a variety of sights, vendors, and activities for the whole family.  

Summer staff member and tour coordinator at the Heritage Village, Rio Lopez, says that all of the village buildings will be open for people to tour alongside the events and performances. 

DJ Richy Roy's sound expanding internationally

Weyburn's Richy Roy is making international moves in the electronic dance music (EDM) scene, signing contracts to release new music with two different international labels. The local DJ and producer recently signed his first contract with Bass Feature, a Swiss-based label, to release two of his tracks. 

“These guys are international and super excited that it's my first signing,” Roy said. 

Strong job market a story of opportunity and growth

Recent data from Statistics Canada is drawing attention to some dynamics of the job markets in Saskatchewan, including here in the southeast. It is characterized by high vacancies and competitive wages that are making the province a magnet for workers from across the country, while at the same time, an abundance of people who are part of the labour force but are not actively employed.  

Paint & Paddle fundraiser a success for WCKC

The Weyburn Canoe and Kayak Club held a Paint & Paddle fundraiser on Saturday, with eight in attendance.

Media Relations Director Lindsay Sterling said it was a blast.

"We each painted our own wooden canoe paddle with totally unique designs. I even got the year we got our seasonal site burned into mine. It's going to be displayed at our campsite," she shared. 

"After the painting, we hit the water. The evening was calm, the weather was perfect, and we just paddled and visited. It was a perfect summer night."

Union vote on Canada Post contract offer set to wrap up Friday afternoon

Unionized workers at Canada Post are entering their final day to vote on the Crown corporation's latest contract offer.

Voting is set to wrap up today at 5 p.m., with results expected to be shared shortly after.

The offer includes wage hikes of about 13 per cent over four years but also adds part-time workers that Canada Post has said are necessary to keep the postal service afloat.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers has urged the roughly 55,000 postal service workers it represents to reject the proposal.

Trump hits Canada with 35 per cent tariffs

Canada was hit with 35 per cent tariffs on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump followed through on his threat to increase the duties if Ottawa didn't make a trade deal.

The White House has said the tariffs would not affect goods compliant with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement on trade, commonly known as CUSMA.

Prime Minister Mark Carney had tempered expectations of an agreement by Friday, saying Ottawa will only agree to a deal "if there's one on the table that is in the best interests of Canadians."
