Saskatchewan invests in safer communities

Saskatchewan is looking to expand its Crime Reduction Teams (CRT) and Warrant Enforcement Suppression Teams (WEST) which will build upon the significant successes of the past year. 

In the first two months of 2023 alone, WEST and CRT have removed a total of 67 guns, 142 grams of meth, 2,019 grams of cocaine, and three grams of fentanyl from Saskatchewan communities.  

Yard Waste Management Program launches for 2023 season

The City of Swift Current’s Yard Waste Management Program has returned for the 2023 season.  

Keegan Story, Superintendent of Solid Waste and Diversion for the City explained that the program is designed for organic yard waste. 

“We've got two different bins, one for leafy waste and one for wood waste,” he elaborated. “The wood waste bin is intended for tree trimmings and bush hedges, not for full tree removal.” 

Spring storm approaching the Southwest

A special weather statement is currently in effect for Swift Current, Herbert, Cabri, Kyle, and Lucky Lake.

A sizeable spring storm is set to affect portions of southern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba on Tuesday night into Wednesday and possibly into Thursday.

A large-scale trough of low pressure extending northward from a Colorado Low in the northern plains of the United States will give a prolonged period of precipitation to the southern Prairies.

Snowfall amounts will likely range from 10 cm to 20 cm.

Is your tap water safe?

Swift Current residents may have been noticing a chemical smell emitting from their tap water over the last several days, however, there is no need for concern. 

The City of Swift Current’s website states that the chlorine levels at the water treatment plant will be increased periodically to ensure that residents have safe drinking water. 

Semi hangs precariously off highway bridge in terrifying incident

Swift Current Municipal RCMP received a 911 call at approximately 6:27 a.m. this morning of a semi-truck that had crashed through the overpass guard rail on the Trans Canada Highway. 

The incident took place east of Swift Current, in the westbound lanes coming into the city. 

Police attended the scene, and no one was injured as a result of the collision. 

‘It’s not snitching’: April highlights Reporting Impaired Drivers program

For the month of April, SGI has shifted its focus over to the importance of reporting impaired driving. 

While reporting an individual to the police is often regarded with a negative connotation, one key factor to keep in mind is that you could actually be saving that person's life, explained Tyler McMurchy, Manager of Media Relations for SGI. 

Flood overtakes additional roads

A combination of the warm weather and the necessary release of water yesterday from the Duncairn Dam has resulted in water levels continuing to rise throughout Swift Current.

In addition to the Lee Lam Bridge, which was closed earlier this week due to flooding, a portion of the road leading into Riverside Park is now inaccessible as well.

The new closure is on the Chinook Parkway, just off the entrance from South Railway Street East.

 

 

What is your house worth?

Property owners in Swift Current should be checking the mailbox this week for their 2023 Property Assessment notices. 

The notices, which were mailed out last week by the City of Swift Current Assessment Department, allow property owners to evaluate their information, and see what their property is valued at, explained Julianne Rempel, Manager of Assessment Services for the City.
