Innovative grant helps bring shade to Village of Climax

The Village of Climax is celebrating the completion of a new gazebo in their playground, made possible by a $2,500 grant from the Innovation Credit Union's Legacy Community & Development Grant Fund. 

Marla Shirley, the CAO for the Village of Climax, expressed gratitude for the grant that made their vision a reality.  

Canada wide warrant issued for homicide suspect

A Canada-Wide Warrant has been issued for homicide suspect, "Juma" Daniel Drie Atem, by the Regina Police Service.

The 30-year-old male is wanted for first-degree murder in a homicide that occurred in the 2100 block of Broad Street, on July 29.

Atem is described as having a dark complexion and a thin build. He is 6'3" tall, and approximately 140 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. The Regina Police Service is asking the public for any information regarding his whereabouts.

Rural fire engages RMSCFD for almost seven hours

Yesterday morning at approximately 11:30 a.m., the RM of Swift Current Fire Department (RMSCFD) was dispatched to a structure fire southeast of Swift Current. 

“Upon arrival, there were a few buildings fully engulfed in flames,” RMSCFD Fire Chief Louis Cherpin stated. 

While the farmyard, located just outside of Rosenhof, was home to numerous animals, none were injured in the blaze. 

Canadian sex offender's trial delayed in South Dakota 

The highly anticipated trial of Benjamin Martin Moore, a Canadian sex offender facing charges in the United States, has been postponed. 

Initially scheduled to begin on August 1, the trial was delayed after a motion for continuance was granted by the court.  

The delay comes as a result of the case being reassigned to a new judge. 

Moore previously pleaded not guilty to the charges laid against him. 

Plains Midstream break-in under investigation by RCMP

The Swift Current Rural RCMP is investigating a break-in at Plains Midstream, located in the RM of Riverside.

The suspect went to the location, cut the lock off the fence, broke into the building, and stole some miscellaneous items at some point on August 1.

Inaugural Sask United Party candidate shares motivations regarding upcoming byelection

In the run-up to the Lumsden-Morse byelection, Jon Hromek, a husband, father of four, and petroleum engineer by trade, is making a strong bid to represent the constituents under the Saskatchewan United Party.  

Hromek, who resides in the Lumsden area, seeks to address key issues facing the region and bring transparency and accountability to the provincial government. 

Summer electricity demand hits record high

Saskatchewan witnessed a surge in electricity demand, setting a new summer record on Monday at 4:55 p.m., reaching a staggering peak consumption of 3,669 megawatts.  

This breaks the record set last August by 72 megawatts. 

Joel Cherry, a spokesperson for SaskPower, shed light on the significance of this record and the contributing factors. 

Southwest loses power

There is currently an unplanned power outage for SaskPower customers in southwest Saskatchewan.

Customers in Swift Current all the way out to Parkbeg and Thunder Creek currently have no power.

The official SaskPower outage map states that damage was caused by weather, leading to the outage.

Swift Current upgraded to Severe Thunderstorm Warning

Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the RM of Swift Current, including Swift Current and Wymark.

Meteorologists with Environment Canada are tracking a severe thunderstorm that has the potential to produce strong wind gusts,  nickel size hail and heavy rain.

The storm is currently located near Cantuar and is moving east at 25 kilometres per hour

Large hail can cause property damage and injury while heavy rain can lead to lash floods and water pooling on roads.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Swift Current, Herbert, Cabri, Kyle, and Lucky Lake has been issued by Environment Canada.

Current conditions are favourable for the formation of severe thunderstorms which are capable of producing strong wind gusts, heavy rain, and hail.

Meteorologists are currently monitoring a trough of low pressure in the southwest corner of Saskatchewan as the focus for the potential storm.

The thunderstorms are expected to weaken travel east this evening.
