River Hills First Responder Group provides chance to dine for a cause

Dining for a cause is the theme this weekend as residents can partake in the upcoming River Hills First Responder Dinner Night Fundraiser. 

Taking place this Saturday, August 6th from 4:00 pm through to 8:00 pm at Swifty's Casual Dinning, Jeremy Pettigrew Coordinator for the River Hills First Responder Group provides details on the necessity of these fundraisers.

"We're all volunteers and we rely on public support to operate. So any funding we receive helps to offset our operating costs such as medical equipment upkeep and vehicle upkeep as well."

Local veterans honored through second year of program

Once again this year the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 will be running their Veteran of the Week program. 

John Griffin, Public Relations Officer from the branch provides further details on the program. 

"It runs from August 1st to November 11th so that's 15 weeks and we feature 15 veterans. Each veteran gets a write-up and a short video."

The write-ups will be posted on the branch's website and the videos will be posted on their YoutTube account. 

Griffin provides details on those that can apply. 

Get back to nature with the 3rd annual National Backyard BioBlitz

Saskatchewan residents can get back to nature and help gather useful information during the 3rd annual National Backyard Bioblitz. 

The bioblitz begins today and runs throughout the weekend and it's easy to participate as Kayla Burak, Engagement Manager for the Nature Conservancy of Canada explains. 

Hot temperatures break SaskPower's summer record

With the increased outdoor temperatures last week, SaskPower saw a new summer record for electricity demand on July 13th. 

The all-time record was set in the Winter of last year, but a spokesperson for SaskPower Joel Cherry explains they saw a summer record peak. 

"The level that we hit was 3551 megawatts. That was just higher than the 3547 megawatts record that was set on June 30th last year. That was during that historic heatwave with extremely high temperatures across Western Canada."

Sage Creek Prairie School puts child led learning first

Children will have the opportunity to lead their own outdoor learning this summer thanks to Sage Creek Prairie School. 

The school offers a variety of programs for students from the age of 2 to adults ranging from bushcraft to survival sessions. 

Kristen Simonson, Director and Lead Teacher at the school describes their child lead learning approach. 

Burger fundraiser a tasty success

It was a packed house of full stomachs at the Buffalo Brew Pub on Monday night and it was all for a great cause. 

Devon Oman put on the Beer and Burger Fundraiser to raise funds for Camp Easter Seal as Oman explains. 

"Some of the proceeds will be going to Camp Easter Seal. If I raise $1500 I will be repelling off a 21-story building in Regina dressed up as a superhero."

In total $800 was raised through the event. 

Oman will continue his fundraising efforts reflecting on Camp Easter Seal's personal importance. 

Slip and slide into summer at CitySplash event

Riverside Park will be turning into a local waterpark tomorrow as part of the CitySplash event being put on by the city. 

Summer Programs Coordinator with the city of Swift Current, McKenzie Acton provides some details on this fun-filled family event. 

"I like to describe CitySplash as basically a DIY waterpark for the day. We have a whole bunch of water games and we have a big inflatable waterslide coming. And it's a great chance for kids to get out into the community, looks like we're going to have a nice hot day so hopefully get in some sun and just have a good time."
