Church must pay $104 million to victims of historical abuse in Newfoundland

The Roman Catholic Church has been ordered to pay settlements totalling $104 million to 292 survivors of historical abuse in Newfoundland and Labrador, including those at the now infamous Mount Cashel orphanage in St. John's.

The decision Friday was met with relief, hurt and even grief by survivors who've endured a decades-long fight for justice, said lawyer Geoff Budden. His firm represents more than 200 survivors of abuse at the former Mount Cashel orphanage from the 1940s to the early 1960s.

Juror dismissed for falling asleep during testimony at Coutts murder-conspiracy trial

One of the jurors hearing evidence in the murder-conspiracy trial surrounding the border blockade at Coutts, Alta., has been dismissed for falling asleep in the courtroom.

Court of King’s Bench Justice David Labrenz told jurors Friday he became aware the female juror was nodding off during testimony in the trial of Anthony Olienick and Chris Carbert.

"The juror had difficulty remaining awake and had been observed on several occasions to have been dozing during the evidence," he told the panel.

A new U.K. government renews hopes for a free-trade deal with Canada

The major shift in the British political landscape after Thursday's election will likely have little impact on Canada's relationship with its ally across the pond, experts say, though it is reviving hope for a possible free-trade deal.

Achim Hurrelmann, a professor of political science at Carleton University, said the two countries have maintained strong ties.

"Even though the (Canadian) Liberal Party and the Conservative Party in the U.K. are of different party families, they have generally work together well on international and trade issues," he said.

Alberta RCMP remove 101 impaired drivers over Canada Day Weekend

This Canada Day long weekend, from June 28 to July 1, your Alberta RCMP removed a total of 101 impaired drivers from our provincial roadways.

Of the 101 impaired motorists, 79 drivers received Immediate Roadside Sanction (IRS) FAILs and 22 received IRS WARNs. As well, 1,679 traffic safety violation tickets were issued with 780 motorists being written up for exceeding the speed limit, 31 for distracted driving, and another 34 for the improper use of vehicle safety restraints. 

Dawson Creek to purchase Eljen Medical Clinic to boost community healthcare

In May 2024, the City of Dawson Creek announced the intention to purchase the Eljen Medical Clinic.

The purchase of the clinic was intended to support healthcare within the community.  

In March 2023, the City of Dawson Creek received a grant of $3,942,000 from the Province of BC through the Growing Communities Fund. The total has since grown to $4,107,264 due to interest accrued. The fund is meant to support the delivery of infrastructure projects that are necessary to enable community growth.

City of Grande Prairie receives federal contribution funding for trail wayfinding signage

New wayfinding signage in residential and commercial areas will soon be available to direct people to the City’s trail system, thanks to a recently received federal contribution.

The $100,000 investment is supported by $60,000 in contribution funding from the Active Transportation Fund, a $400 million national infrastructure investment to make travel by active transportation easier, safer, more convenient and more enjoyable. The City of Grande Prairie earmarked $40,000 in the 2024 Budget as part of the Transportation capital project.
