Bienfait Memorial Arena to host Skate Park fundraiser

The town of Bienfait is coming together to support a new skate park with a full day of fun at the Bienfait Memorial Arena on March 22, 2025. The fundraiser kicks off at 9:00 AM with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Southern Plains Co-op, followed by a full schedule of activities, including a U7 hockey game, glow skating, bouncy castles, and a special matchup between the Bienfait Fire Department and the Women’s Bienfait Bulldogs.

Entry for the event is $10 for the entire day, with all proceeds going toward the skate park project.

Snowy days mean slick roads: police cautions motorists to drive carefully today

Southeast Saskatchewan received a bit of a surprise this morning. Snow fell on the majority of the area, blanketing its roads and highways.

After a cold February, the southeast has been treated to warmer days and dry roads. Now, the Estevan Police Service is asking motorists to stay safe today and to slow down. 

Estevan to shine green in March for Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month

The Estevan City Council has approved a proclamation recognizing March as Cerebral Palsy Awareness Month and March 25, 2025, as Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day.

During the council meeting, a representative requested that the city officially recognize the awareness campaign by lighting City Hall and the water tower in green throughout March. Additionally, the proclamation will be read at the March 24, 2025, council meeting, as March 25 falls outside the regular meeting schedule.

EPS arrests man for multiple breaches of conditions

UPDATE: The Estevan Police Service confirmed Saturday that they have located J.J. Poitras after multiple breaches of his Conditional Sentence Order. 

Poitras was arrested after a warrant was executed on a residence in the north end of the city. Police said he was taken into custody without incident. They thanked the community's help in finding him. Poitras will appear in the Estevan Provincial Court today. 

NDP comments on Radville doctor situation

The Saskatchewan NDP provided their thoughts to Discover Estevan on the situation happening with the emergency room at the Radville Marian Health Centre. There have been a number of closures of the facility in recent weeks, with 10 since the start of February. 

Meara Conway is the shadow Minister of Rural and Remote Health. She said this is an issue happening across the province, but what is happening in Radville isn’t insignificant.  

Meaningful, impactful work serving the southeast: Envision seeking board members

The Board of Directors for Envision Counselling & Support Centre are hoping to have some new members signed on before their Annual General Meeting, which is being held June 18th in Estevan.

Communications Coordinator Raven Daer said this is so they can be introduced at the AGM, and have what they need to be prepared.  

"To have all of our ducks in a row, so that moving forward into our new year, we are fresh and ready with a wonderful team to support us in everything we are looking at doing."

Ian Smith used to spend most of his days behind a desk in the RCMP's Windsor, Ont., detachment, working on investigations and performing administrative duties. As a member of the force's border integrity unit, the constable says he didn't even have to wear his uniform. 

But that recently changed. 

Smith now dons a uniform and body armour as he drives a marked RCMP vehicle to help patrol roughly 800 kilometres of Ontario's border with the United States, in addition to his usual investigative work. 

Carney heading to Europe for first foreign trip since becoming prime minister

Mark Carney departed for his first foreign trip on Sunday, set to visit France and the U.K., with an additional stop in Iqaluit, Nvt., during a whirlwind three-day jaunt.

The aim of the trip is to strengthen ties with France and the U.K. and reaffirm Canada's Arctic sovereignty before returning on Tuesday.

Carney is expected to talk about security and economic and trade ties while in Europe, where he will meet with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Carney will also meet with King Charles while in the U.K.

New Chinese tariffs on Canadian canola products to have 'devastating impact' on farmers

China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) has announced the outcome of its anti-discrimination investigation initiated against Canada in September 2024 as a result of the federal government’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel and aluminum. 

China’s State Council Tariff Commission will impose a 100 per cent tariff rate on Canadian canola oil and canola meal along with several other Canadian agricultural commodities as of March 20, 2025.
