Canadian flights, hospitals, border disrupted during global technology outage

A global technology outage had grounded flights, disrupted hospitals and backed up border crossings in Canada on Friday, as reported issues persisted hours after the issues with Microsoft services were said to be getting fixed.

Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said that the issue believed to be behind the outage was not a security incident or cyberattack.  The issue affected Microsoft 365 apps and services, and escalating disruptions continued after the technology company said it was gradually fixing it.

Mosquito born illness on the rise in North America

Dr. Torr with SHA warns with the heat the mosquitos known to carry mosquito born illness are moving Northward. Cases are spreading into southern United States which is putting more and more travelers at risk of mosquito born illness. "For travelers there has been a lot of warnings and advisories for mosquito born illness" says Dr Torr "In Texas they have had cases of malaria and dengue fever"

Lorraine passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at Mainprize Manor & Health Centre in Midale, Saskatchewan.

The family would like to give a special thank you and appreciation of care to the staff at Mainprize Manor & Health Centre. They were her family, and they are going to miss her dearly.

A private family internment will take place at a later date.

EPYC $34,000 donation to help revitalize youth centre

The Estevan Public Youth Centre (EPYC) received a $34,000 donation from Kingston Midstream and Tundra Oil & Gas, with each company presenting a $17,000 cheque.

“We believe in supporting local nonprofit organizations, charities, and community initiatives through our community investment efforts, particularly with the generous support from our parent company, James Richardson and Sons Limited,” said Dena Bachorcik, public awareness and community investment coordinator at Kingston Midstream. 

All major grocers agree to sign on to Canada's Grocery Sector Code of Conduct

The announcement was released during the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers annual conference.

In a statement they note that : "After years of work and widespread industry participation, all major retailers have agreed to join the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct. This includes Loblaw, Sobeys, and Metro, and most recently, Walmart and Costco. "

'Anything is possible': Gen. Jennie Carignan takes over command of Armed Forces

Gen. Jennie Carignan was a little emotional on Thursday as she spoke to reporters about what it means to take over command of the Canadian Armed Forces. 

It's an honour that felt like the natural next step in her career, she said, something she's worked toward for the last 38 years. It also means, for other women or marginalized people, that "it's possible, folks — the door is open."

"This is actually what my parents used to tell me: 'Anything is possible. You can do anything,'" she said. 

Join the Bruins Family: Billet opportunities available

The Estevan Bruins are seeking additional billet families for the upcoming hockey season. Billeting provides players, some as young as 16, with a home away from home, enabling them to complete high school, take college courses, or work part-time while playing hockey.

“In most cases, very strong bonds are made between players, the billet families, and the player families,” said Mandee Park, Billet Coordinator for the Bruins. “We’ve been building here for a few years, and the relationships have carried on for many years after the players have left the team.”

Grasshopper populations kept at bay with cold, wet weather

The cold and wet weather we experience in late spring and early summer has kept the population of grasshoppers at bay, according to Ministry of Agriculture entomologist Dr. James Tansey. 

While grasshopper damage among crops was widespread last year, producers are mainly seeing “hotspots” throughout the province this year.
