RCMP urging water safety on Lake Diefenbaker after incidents
The Outlook RCMP is pleading for public safety around Lake Diefenbaker and the South Saskatchewan River on Labour Day weekend, following two waterway incidents earlier this summer.
According to a release from the Saskatchewan RCMP issued on Saturday, the first incident late last month involved two youth fishing, who ended up being stranded on a sandbar.
"Unfamiliar with the South Saskatchewan River, rising water levels and decreasing daylight left them unable to return to shore," says the Saskatchewan RCMP.
Colts start new season with strong win over Weyburn
A great way to kick off a new day.
The Swift Current Comp Colts started a new era of their football program with their first victory over Weyburn since 2019.
The Colts handled the Eagles 21-6 in their first 5A high school football game of the 2025 season.
It was also a debut victory for Colts Head Coach Andrew Herrick as he takes over after a two-decade run from Derek Murdoch at the helm.
Murdoch remains on staff as an assistant.
Case adjourned for local man facing charges from repeat offences
A Swift Current man currently remanded in custody had multiple matters in court adjourned earlier this week.
25-year-old Blaine Charles Peters appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on Friday morning on charges, including his most recent, which stem from a series of substantial thefts that took place between August 4 and August 8.
Crown prosecutor, Gregory Lee, shared that Peter's defence counsel is looking into possibly sending him to a treatment centre, and requested time to go over more information.

Canadian veteran performs concert at Legion in Swift Current
The Swift Current Legion Branch 56 was able to welcome musician Robert Ross for a concert on Wednesday.
Ross is currently touring through local Legion Branches as he makes his way across Canada for the Canadian Country Music Awards Country Music Week in Kelowna, B.C.
Ross is himself a veteran and is using these shows as a way to give back to the Legion.
"(The Legion is) an organization that does so much good for the community and for all veterans," said Ross via Facebook.
Sask. cattle company fined $25K after worker drowns in dugout
A Saskatchewan cattle company has been fined $25,000 after a workplace incident led to the death of a worker near Walpole.
Ramage Land & Cattle Company Ltd. pleaded guilty in Regina provincial court on Aug. 12 to one violation of The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, 2020.
The charge stemmed from an incident on Aug. 23, 2023, when a worker drowned after entering a dugout on horseback.
Southwest History: If rocks could talk pt. II, over 1,000-year-old carvings
The petroglyphs of St. Victor Petroglyphs Provincial Historic Park aren't the only, or the oldest, carvings in the southwest left by an ancient civilization.
The Swift Current Creek Petroglyph Boulder, also known as the Green Hectares Petroglyph, is a collection of carvings on a large rock, located only a few kilometres northeast of Swift Current.
Highway 7 drivers warned after complaints of unsafe driving, RCMP say
Rosetown RCMP say they responded to a number of calls ranging from suspicious activity to driving complaints during the week of Aug. 22 to 28.
On Aug. 22, police investigated a report of suspicious activity at a local business. RCMP say no signs of criminal activity were found. That same day, officers also responded to a 911 call from a residence in Rosetown. It was determined not to be an emergency.
Later in the week, RCMP dealt with several driving complaints on Highway 7. Police say some of the vehicles were located and drivers were issued warnings.

Researchers are urging Canada, United States and Mexico to take immediate action to save the monarch butterfly as the migratory insect faces a growing risk of extinction amid habitat loss.
The iconic butterfly's population has decreased by around 80 per cent in the past two decades, says the paper published in the journal Current Biology, with the loss of breeding habitat cited as the main reason behind the sharp decline.

National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak says politicians will be paying close attention to the resolutions chiefs pass related to the federal major projects legislation. The bill, which passed in June, has seen strong opposition from some First Nations leaders and community members who fear it won't respect their rights.
Saskatchewan farmers now have over half the winter cereal harvest complete
Farmers are working on bringing in the harvest as the weather cooperates.
Last week's hot, dry weather also brought its share of thunderstorm activity with strong winds and hail which caused some lodging in crops. The Nipawin area had the most rainfall, with 42 mm, followed by the North Battleford and Consul areas with 30 mm and 28 mm, respectively. A number of other areas around the province are also seeing some scattered showers.
