Saskatchewan farmers now have over half the winter cereal harvest complete
Farmers are working on bringing in the harvest as the weather cooperates.
Last week's hot, dry weather also brought its share of thunderstorm activity with strong winds and hail which caused some lodging in crops. The Nipawin area had the most rainfall, with 42 mm, followed by the North Battleford and Consul areas with 30 mm and 28 mm, respectively. A number of other areas around the province are also seeing some scattered showers.
More funding available through Alberta's Feeder Associations Loan Guarantee Program
Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson has announced an increase in the lending limit on the Feeder Associations Loan Guarantee Program (FALGP).
Locally owned feeder associations utilize the program for low-interest financing backed by a government guarantee. Through the program feeder associations help livestock producers get financing to buy animals and grow their herds.
Producer, Dustin Lamb says the program played a huge part in his decision to return to the family farm and will be instrumental in keeping it going.
Wildfire arsonist arrested in Saskatoon
Saskatoon Police have arrested a man charged with arson related to a wildfire at Weyakwin.
On May 26, 2025, a fire started near Weyakwin, which is located 700km north of Swift Current. An investigation conducted by fire investigators and the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency investigated the cause of what became known as the Ditch 2 Fire.
It was determined that the fire was caused by a human. Waskesiu RCMP investigation determined that Jason Halkett from La Ronge was to be charged with one count of arson - damage to property.
Two local minor ball players attend Baseball Sask camp
A pair of Swift Current Minor Baseball players were a part of Baseball Saskatchewan's 13U AAA Select Development Camp last weekend.
Catcher/first baseman Ben Reiter and shortstop/pitcher Jett Girodat were among the 48 players from across the province to attend the camp.
Mark Reiter said Girodat and Ben were selected for the program based on their performance at tryouts and throughout the season.
"Their participation highlights the continued growth of baseball in Swift Current," he noted in an email to Swift Current Online.
A pop of porcupine colour in Swift Current
A brand new mural was officially unveiled in Swift Current at the walking bridge near Elmwood Park.
Located off of Sixth Avenue Northeast, this mural features local wildlife such as a porcupine, a fox, and other pieces of southwest Saskatchewan's ecology.
Luke Maddford, curator of exhibitions and programming with the Swift Current Art Gallery, gave a huge congratulations to Marsha Schuld on completing this piece.
Another local Lunch and Learn at the Swift Current Museum
A unique piece of southwest history is the focus of The Swift Current Museum's upcoming Lunch and Learn on September 17.
Kent Karemaker will be giving a presentation on his journey in bringing the halls of Shaunavon's famed Grand Hotel back to life. Crystal Ljunggren, the Education Coordinator with the Museum, said she hopes guests can appreciate the hard work and dedication behind the revival of a piece of southwest history.
Innovation pushes the SPCA Swift Current forward towards new facility
The Swift Current SPCA received grant funding from the Innovation Federal Credit Union earlier this year as part of their yearly community support.
The $25,000 came through on the Legacy Community & Development Grant Fund on February 14. The SPCA will be using this money to help construct its new shelter and pet crematorium.

RCMP searching for suspect vehicle involved in crash with cyclist
The Saskatchewan RCMP says they're investigating a collision that sent a cyclist to the hospital near Ernfold on Sunday as a hit-and-run.
According to police, the suspect vehicle did not stop after it hit Doug Angle, who was biking eastbound just east of the village.
The suspect vehicle is described as a 2008-2009 Mercedes C-Class sedan.
Martens Mutterings: New year, new friends, new worries
As school is set to start for another year, 2 of our 3 girls are going into new grades (the other is in pre-K), and are excited to see new teachers, new friends etc. Yet, the parental fear is always there; will they make new friends?
Even with established friends, and no concern shown by either kid about going into a new grade with a new teacher, and many of your friends not being in that same class this year, I still have that fear. The what if. What if they don't meet anyone new, or they miss their friends. What if, what if, etc etc.
Road closure ramps up near downtown Swift Current
Residents of Swift Current have been advised of a closure to a small portion of Sixth Avenue North West on Friday, August 29.
The section of Sixth Avenue North West located between Cheadle Street West and North Railway Street West will be closed throughout the day to accommodate necessary repairs to a water main.
