Road work and traffic signal maintenance planned for June 30
Grande Prairie drivers can expect minor delays Monday, June 30, as the City carries out guardrail repairs and traffic signal maintenance at key locations.
Crews will be working on the 99 Avenue eastbound bridge and the 132 Avenue bridge east of 116 Street to maintain the safety of the approach rail systems. Expect minor lane closures on 99 Avenue and reduced speeds (50 km/h) on 132 Avenue during the work.
Traffic signal maintenance is also scheduled at the 116 Avenue and 102 Street intersection, with possible lane closures.
Wilson pushes for local control over climate policies
Councillor Patrick Wilson is calling on town council to withdraw from an international climate initiative and limit involvement in similar programs unless explicitly approved by council.
A notice of motion presented on June 23 calls for the town to cease participation in the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI) and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program.
Enbridge makes initial community investments in Weyburn region
With a planned investment of more than $500 million to develop its proposed Seven Stars Energy Project, Enbridge Inc. has made a series of grants to local organizations that help support a strong community.

Canada Day By The Lake returns to John Peake Memorial Park next week.
On July 1, residents are invited to make it out to the lake for a day of free fun, entertainment, and community spirit.
The event begins at 9 a.m. with a pancake breakfast, free for the first 2,000 guests. Following breakfast, there will be live stage performances leading up to noon.
Alberta finance Minister to deliver year-end fiscal update, $5.8B surplus forecasted
Alberta’s finance minister is set to deliver the final bottom line number today on last year’s provincial budget.
Nate Horner’s new figure will close the books on the budget for the fiscal year that ended in March.
That budget was last forecast to come in with a nearly $6-billion surplus.
Alberta’s new budget year is now a few months old, but its expected bottom line number is deep in the red.
This budget, introduced by Horner in February, predicts Alberta will register a $5.2-billion deficit at the end of March 2026.
Significant drug seizure by Rural Grande Prairie County RCMP
On June 21, 2025, the Rural Grande Prairie County RCMP were conducting proactive patrols in the Clairmont area when they pulled over a vehicle. In the course of the traffic stop, officers noted drug paraphernalia, which resulted in the arrest of the occupant and the subsequent search of the vehicle. The search revealed approximately 4.237 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1.589 kilograms of cocaine and just over $11,000 in Canadian currency, believed to be proceeds of crime.
As a result of he investigation, Chad Simonson (50), a resident of Grande Prairie, was charged with:
'Fingers on Fire' bringing flipping fingerboards back to Strathmore
'Fingers on Fire 3' will be arriving at Strathmore next month.
The event is hosted by Fidgety Digits Fingerboarding, which Strathmore resident Brandon Kehler created several years ago.
"Within a day or two of the last event, we got the ball rolling for this year's event," said Kehler. "Since the last event, I've been networking a lot and working to build the scene in Calgary."
J&S Tire Flapjack Friday pancake breakfast enjoys third iteration
Flapjacks, sausage, coffee and just a little bit of rain were on the menu at J&S Tire in Swift Current this morning.
The third annual J&S Tire pancake breakfast saw a few raindrops in with the pancakes being cooked up by Swift Current Ride for Dad. Even with the precipitation, people still came out for their griddle-made morning meal.
Tony Buckmeier, co-owner of J&S Tire, is happy to host the event for the fun of it and to support Swift Current Ride for Dad.

RCMP Serious Crime Branch is actively investigating the homicide which took place on June 22, 2025, on Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation. The investigation has identified a suspect. Brandon Munro (35), of no fixed address, is wanted for the second-degree murder of Isiah Cardinal (28), a resident of Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation.
RCMP is seeking public assistance in locating Munro.

Rain can’t spoil the rhubarb: Paynton’s first-ever Rhubarb Festival a sweet success
The village of Paynton, Sask., hosted its inaugural Rhubarb Festival on June 21, and despite steady rain, spirits were anything but dampened.
The day kicked off with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by festival chair Tracy Rumold and emcee Shaunna Rhinehart. Mayor David Pelletier welcomed attendees and praised the organizing committee, which was joined by RM of Paynton Reeve Kevin Garrett and Cut Knife–Turtleford MLA James Thorsteinson.
