Red Deer hockey coach — and ex-NHLer — investigated after golf course fight

Red Deer Minor Hockey says it is conducting an internal investigation after a video surfaced showing one of its coaches, former NHL player Nick Tarnasky, involved in a fight at a golf course.

The incident took place recently at Alberta Springs Golf Resort, just outside Red Deer.

Severe thunderstorm watch in Swift Current

Parts of southwest Saskatchewan are dealing with a severe thunderstorm watch this evening.

The watch comes in conjunction with a heat warning already in effect for much of the area as well.

"We do have the dynamics for some more active weather in parts of southwest Saskatchewan including Swift Current," said Christy Climenhaga, Scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "The risk of those severe storms developing through the rest of the evening... producing large hail, very strong wind gusts, and heavy rain.

Saskatchewan introduces new program to expand mineral exploration grants

An expansion of the province's Targeted Mineral Exploration Incentive (TMEI) was announced today as the province aims to encourage more early-stage exploration activities in the mining sector.

Since 2018, the TMEI program has provided financial assistance in the form of a grant to exploration companies that undertake eligible drilling activities. With the province's expansion, the program will cover a wider range of exploration activities, including ground-based and borehole geophysical surveys and important pre-sampling tasks like core logging.

Fire ban to be issued on Thursday morning for northern area of Saskatchewan

From their latest update on Wednesday afternoon, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency says that a fire ban will be issued at 8:00 am on Thursday, July 10, encompassing the area north of the provincial forest boundary, up to the Churchill River.   

The ban is being issued due to high fire activity and extreme fire risk.  

Confirmed case of measles prompts public alert to potential exposures in Fairview

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has been notified of people with confirmed measles in the North Zone who have been in a public setting while infectious. Additional locations may be released if necessary.

Local man behind bars after sentencing on series of incidents

A southwest man pleaded guilty to almost half a dozen charges this morning, garnered from several incidents that took place between June 2024 and June 2025.

Michael Douglas Graham appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on Wednesday morning by video, where he was sentenced on five of the nine charges he faced;

One count of possession of property obtained unlawfully, 
One count of driving while suspended, and
Three counts of failure to comply with a release order.

Cochrane Library's Sounds of Summer begins

The sweet sounds of Scottish piping and drumming echoed across the front lawn of the Cochrane Public Library as siblings Kellan and Berkeley Harris-Still launched the Sounds of Summer concert series on Tuesday evening.

More than 50 people gathered under the early evening sun to enjoy two sets, get a behind-the-scenes look at the traditional instruments, and learn more about the Cochrane Pipe Band.

RDP secures $1.75M to advance applied research

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has received a $1.75-million grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and renewal of their Technology Access Centre designation to continue advancing applied research through the polytechnic’s Centre for Innovation in Manufacturing Technology Access Centre (CIM-TAC).
