Strathmore Fire Department reminds residents to have food drive bags ready for Friday

Strathmore residents should make sure to have their bags full of food and on their front porch by the early morning on Friday.

"Don't forget, we'll be picking up any filled bags for the food drive tomorrow, starting at 9 a.m. If you'd like to contribute non-perishable food items, please place it in the bag delivered to your place and leave it on the front porch. You can also drop off your donations at the Fire Hall," mentioned the Strathmore Fire Department in a Facebook post.

Terry Fox Run looking for new organizer in Strathmore

Diana Baird, former organizer of the Terry Fox Run in Strathmore, is looking for someone to take her place.

On Wednesday, Mar. 5, Baird announced that she would be stepping away as run organizer and is looking for a person or group to run the event.

"I got a call from the Town of Strathmore. They did the run during COVID, and I assume they just went down every volunteer organization they could find until someone said yes," laughed Baird as she spoke about first joining the run.

United States President Donald Trump put a pause on some Canadian imports related to the auto industry and lowered levies on potash to 10 per cent on Thursday.

According to Trump, it's meant to help maintain the flow of parts to American car manufacturers and help farmers.

Despite the news, Canada still has 25 per cent tariffs imposed by the U.S along with 10 per cent on energy that were brought in on Tuesday.

Canada retaliated by imposing its own retaliatory tariffs of up to $155 billion on the U.S.

CRA offers tips for tax season

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is giving residents tips as their T4s come in.

Navneet Kaur, a spokesperson with the CRA, said that scams are more common than usual.

"Because this is the time of the year when scammers are aware that people are expecting refunds, benefits, or credits. Nonetheless, we have to be vigilant throughout the year."

Kaur also gave tips on taxes based on the most frequent reassessments that they do at the CRA.

An extraordinary image of a bald eagle and a magpie eating a rabbit together was posted to a Strathmore social media page.

The image was shared by Sean Currie, a local photographer who has an eye for wildlife.

"I've had an interest for quite a while. I started taking it up more in the early 2000s. I had just a little point-and-shoot camera, and it took 15 seconds between photos, so they had to be well thought out in advance."

Trump announces one-month tariff pause on some Canadian goods, lowers potash levy

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that pauses tariffs on some Canadian imports linked to the auto industry that comply with the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement, and also lowers levies on potash to 10 per cent.

The order, read out in the Oval Office on Thursday, says the tariff relief is linked to maintaining the flow of parts to American car manufacturers and to helping farmers.

It was not clear exactly what would be included in the exemptions.

Chestermere RCMP partners with residents to combat crime with security camera mapping

The City of Chestermere is encouraging residents to sign up for an initiative to help RCMP protect the community.

"Protect your property, family, and community by registering your security cameras with the Chestermere RCMP Capture Program. By participating, you assist the RCMP in deterring crime and speeding up investigations by providing crucial footage," mentioned the city in a Facebook post.

According to the city, the program looks to map security cameras in the community to help prevent crime.

Voting across the Bow River riding to open for Conservative candidate on Friday

After weeks of campaigning, Bow River Conservative members will soon for their next candidate.

Four men are vying for the position. JL DeCosta, Josh Skenner, David Bexte, and Graham Abela.

There will be three voting locations in towns and cities across the riding with Strathmore being one of them.

Members of the Conservative Party can vote at the Strathmore Travelodge on March 7 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Before voting there will be candidate speeches which will start at 4:30 p.m.
