Special Olympics Weyburn celebrates success at AGM

Special Olympics Weyburn (SOW) held their annual general meeting this past Wednesday. According to their release, they saw successes across various fields.  

Two bowling teams comprised of ten bowlers attended the annual Bob Pedde Tournament in Saskatoon. Three athletes brought home singles medals. Two athletes attended swim meets in Saskatoon and Regina, bringing home medals from both events.  

Another SOW athlete made Team Sask in the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary AB for bowling. The team took home a silver medal.

A 17-year-old is in recovery after sustaining serious injuries from a motor vehicle accident on August 18th.

Michelle Schlacter is originally from Weyburn. She is the first-born daughter of Toni Schlacter and Brad Johnson, who also have twin 12-year-old girls, Tori and Serena. The family now lives in Buylea, north of Regina.

Family friend Gina McKerricher said Michelle had been traveling with her boyfriend Kayne and their friend Woody on a grid road in foggy, wet conditions when their vehicle ended up heading toward the ditch.

Afternoon storm brings heavy rainfall, toonie sized hail

Storm systems hitting Weyburn yesterday and overnight brought significant precipitation and up to toonie sized hail.  

Meteorologist for Environment Canada, Stephen Berg, says the Weyburn received five to upwards of 20 millimetres of rain in the past 24 hours. There were also reports of hail, its size and severity varying across the city.  

Iris Hauser on exhibit “Crone Ascendant”: A powerful tribute to older women

Saskatoon artist Iris Hauser will kick off this year's Culture Days with an artist talk and live portraiture class. She will discuss her exhibit, Crone Ascendant, currently on display at the Weyburn Art Gallery. 

Hauser says there are 15 portraits in the exhibit depicting older women, many of the subjects represent different women in her life. 

WPS on student safety: Stop for school buses

With school back in session, the Weyburn Police Service continues to monitor and maintain safety in school zones. This extends to ensuring students are transported safely to and from school 

Sergeant Shane St. John offers safety reminders regarding driving around school busses. He says many people hold the misconception that only one lane of traffic must stop for a school bus stop sign. 

India gives another two month extension on duty-free imports of yellow peas

There's some good news for Canada's pulse sector as industry representatives gather this week in Winnipeg for the Annual Pulse and Special Crops Convention.

India announced late last week that it would once again extend the timeline for duty-free imports of yellow peas until December 31st, 2024.

India originally lifted the duties on pea imports on a temporary basis in December of 2023 and has continued to issue temporary extensions since then, while the import duty exemption on lentils is in place through March 31, 2025.

Construction is underway on a new state of the art flour mill for Western Canada

P&H Milling Group, a division of Parrish & Heimbecker Limited, have started construction on a new, state-of-the-art flour milling facility in Red Deer County. 

A sod-turning event earlier this month marked the start for the $241 million facility which will have the capacity to mill an estimated 750 metric tonnes of wheat daily from Western Canadian farmers.

16 soldiers injured in accident at Valcartier military base in Quebec

More than a dozen soldiers were sent to hospital this afternoon after an accident at a military base in Quebec.

Capt. Hermione Wilson, a public affairs officer with the Canadian Armed Forces, says the accident took place at Canadian Forces Base Valcartier.

Wilson says the accident in the base's training area involved two armoured vehicles.

She says civilian and military emergency services responded immediately to the scene.

Wilson says 16 members of the 5 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group were taken to local hospitals with minor injuries.
