More rain possible for Weyburn after very rainy weekend

Residents in southeastern Saskatchewan are being advised to keep an eye on the sky Monday evening as another round of severe weather is in the forecast, following a weekend that brought intense lightning and heavy downpours to the region. 

The stormy weather kicked off Friday with what many locals described as a continuous roll of thunder. According to Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, the system was electrically charged.

The flea beetle is a common pest for farmers and gardeners alike in this corner of the province. However, there is more to the species than meets the eye. PSaskatchewan's Insect and Vertebrate Pest Management Specialist for the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. James Tansey, says that the term “flea beetle” covers approximately 5,000 species worldwide, in a subfamily called the Alticinae.  

RCMP provide further updates on fatal highway 39 shooting, seek new vehicle

Saskatchewan RCMP’s Major Crimes unit had a heavy presence in Weyburn over the weekend, following a shooting on Highway 39. 

On Friday, September 12, around 8:00 p.m., two Weyburn women were travelling in a black Ford Explorer SUV on Highway 39 when a large crack was heard. Upon investigation, it was determined that a firearm was discharged and entered the back of the SUV, striking the 44-year-old passenger, who died on scene.

Entertainment Committee Chair Korryn Kubashek said they have more spots to fill this year due to the hours being expanded for the annual telethon, which broadcasts live from the Weyburn Legion beginning at 8 a.m. on October 24th and concludes at 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 25th.

Build Canada Homes aims to build 4,000 housing units on federal land: Carney

The newly created Build Canada Homes agency will oversee plans to build 4,000 homes on six federally owned sites, as part of a $13 billion agency budget to speed up affordable home building, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Sunday. 

Carney said that the $13 billion will offer financial incentives for builders to construct affordable homes and reduce upfront costs of affordable homebuilding.

Specific locations for the homes have not yet been announced, but Carney said they will be in Dartmouth, N.S., Longueuil, Que., Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg and Edmonton.

The budget

The Liberal government took some heat in the spring when it decided to delay the introduction of the federal budget, which is typically done in March or April, until this fall. 

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said his fiscal plan is set to be released in October.
