Weyburn

The South East Cornerstone Public School Division approved the 2025-26 school calendar at their meeting last week. The calendar will see the students in class for 184 days, with a total of 13 non-instructional days. The majority of the non-instructional days take place before and after the end of the in-class days.  

April marks the unofficial start of digging season in Saskatchewan, and with it comes a province-wide campaign to promote safety and awareness around ground disturbance. The Saskatchewan Common Ground Alliance (SCGA) has officially launched Dig Safe Month, kicking things off with the first of 23 free breakfast events hosted in communities across the province. 

This week is Global Asbestos Awareness Week. With the start of the week, the Government of Saskatchewan is reminding the public about the province’s Asbestos Registry.

The registry, which was updated and launched in February, has the list and location of public buildings and publicly owned buildings that are known to contain asbestos. This helps to ensure workers who are performing repairs and renovations know about the risks involving asbestos.  

Liam Fitzgerald opened the scoring, and Max Chakrabarti finished it, as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings beat the Battlefords North Stars 2-1 Monday night to advance to the SJHL semifinals. The win gave the Red Wings the series win in six games, and marks the first time since the 2011-12 season the team has advanced to the semi-finals.  

A nine-member team of educational superintendents and coordinators delivered a walk-through of data from the South East Cornerstone Public School Division during their March 25th board meeting. 

The Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division recently announced a new position introduced to their operations, Superintendent of Human Resources. Current Principal of St. Michael School in Weyburn, Sabrina Gulka, has been appointed to the role.  

Director of Education with the Holy Family RCSSD, Ken Sampson, explains the role encompasses all levels of responsibilities related to human resources, which has been previously managed by various personnel across the division. 

Liberal Leader Mark Carney promised Monday to get the federal government back into the business of home building, while Pierre Poilievre's Conservatives pitched a national energy corridor to fast-track approval of key infrastructure.

The New Democrats rolled out their own national project — a promise to help retrofit 3.3 million homes and pay for it by cutting supports for big oil and gas companies.

An incident involving the U18 Wawota Flyers has drawn public scrutiny after photos surfaced on social media earlier this month showing players in a dressing room with alcohol. One of the images included a caption deemed extremely offensive, leading to multiple suspensions at both the league and provincial levels.

Weyburn residents can expect a splash of excitement this Tuesday as the City of Weyburn officially relaunches its Spring and Summer Leisure Guide, with a renewed focus on the upcoming outdoor pool season.
