Crop would be eligible for biofuel tax credit under recent budget proposals in Congress

U.S. President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” could contain some beautiful news for Canada’s canola growers.

The U.S. House of Representatives’ ways and means committee has released its draft proposals for the U.S. budget reconciliation bill.

The proposals include provisions to amend the controversial 45Z clean fuel production tax credit so that canola oil-based biodiesel and renewable diesel would be eligible for the credit.

Producer groups come together to help fund ag research facilities at U of S

Construction is underway at the University of Saskatchewan that will see critical facility improvements within the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.

Two new facilities are being built - the Harrington Plant Growth Facility and the Soil Science Field Facility - while a portion of the Crop Science Field Lab is being renovated to provide additional workspace for the Crop Development Centre. 

Weyburn Therapeutic Animal Park preparing for opening weekend

The Weyburn Therapeutic Animal Park is gearing up for another exciting season, with preparations well underway ahead of the official opening day on June 7th. 

This Saturday, volunteers will be gathering at the park for a spring work bee starting at 10 a.m. to help clean up the grounds. The event is a key part of getting the park ready for visitors.

Deputy Chief Shane St. John with the Weyburn Police Service said some are determined to get into even locked gates, such as by cutting a hole in a fence, which was part of an incident last week still under investigation.

Donna Marie Moar - February 17, 1948 – April 29, 2025

It is with deep sorrow and anguish that I announce the passing of Donna Marie Moar on April 29, 2025, at the age of 77 years.

Donna was predeceased by her parents, Allan and Lottie Ireland; her nephews, Robert Todd Devitt and Camryn Sutherland-Tripp.

Soo Line Historical Museum, Heritage Village open for the season

The Soo Line Historical Museum and Weyburn & Area Heritage Village officially opened their doors for the 2025 season this week. The two popular attractions allow the public to explore Weyburn’s unique history and prairie roots. This year, visitors will also be able to do it with free admission throughout the summer. 

Both heritage sites began welcoming visitors on Tuesday. 

Weyburn area sees $40K+ in charitable gaming grants

As part of the Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS)'s $2.1 million in charitable gaming grants distributed in the fourth quarter of 2024-25, more than 1,100 groups and organizations across the province have benefitted, including right here in Weyburn and area.

The amount of each grant paid by LGS to each charity is calculated by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority (SLGA) based on financial reports and other information submitted by the group or organization. Groups can apply through SLGA's charitable gaming licensing process here.

Newcomer to share on Indian culture: 'Here's My Story' kids series at WPL

Southeast Advocates will present a new story-telling series for children: 'Here's My Story', at the Weyburn Public Library beginning on Wednesday, May 28th at 4 p.m. The first speaker is Monika Sharma, who moved with her family to Weyburn from northern India nearly two years ago. 

Sharma will share about her cultural heritage, and while she practices the Hindu religion, the presentation will be cultural, focusing on festivals, food, clothes, and the celebrations she grew up enjoying in India. 

Western premiers agree to develop new economic corridors, call for federal support

Canada's western premiers say they've agreed to identify, plan and develop new economic corridors to connect provincial resources to international markets.

A joint statement issued Thursday says doing so would boost Canada's market access in Asia and Europe while the country fights a trade war with the United States and China.
