National Cinema Day means $3 movies!

This long weekend is a big one!

It's going to be beautiful outside and it's kinda like the last weekend of summer for some of the students out there.

If you're trying to escape the heat we've been enduring for the past week in a nice, cool, dark space, you'll be happy to know that this Saturday (Sept. 3), is National Cinema Day and a lot of theatres are celebrating with $3 movies!

You read that right and our friends at Landmark Cinemas Tamarack are joining in on the fun:

Late-summer heatwave in the forecast this long weekend

It's going to be one hot Labour Day long weekend.

Crank up the A/C and slather on some sunscreen because the heat returns this weekend with highs forecasted in the low 30s. According to Environment Canada warning preparedness meteorologist Natalie Hazell, temperatures will have the area firmly in heat warning criteria for most of the weekend.

"We are looking at a high of 32 C Friday, and lows are not falling below 14 C for the next three days," said Hazell.

Highway 1 at Kicking Horse Canyon will be open through long weekend

If you're looking to escape to B.C. over the long weekend there's some good news.

Highway 1 by Kicking Horse Canyon has been fully opened to traffic but just for the weekend.

Construction has taken a timeout until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6th.

Although there might be occasional stoppages to move equipment there won't be the previous stoppages which could last up to 30 minutes or more at times.

It's the final link of Highway 1 between Yoho National Park and Golden, B.C.

Bruderheim Fall Festival preps for busy weekend

Families in the community won’t have to look far for a fun weekend event.

The Bruderheim Fall Festival is set to get underway on Saturday (Sept. 3) at the local ag grounds.

They expect a chocked full day of activities. Continental breakfast at the Bruderheim Community Hall will kick things off at 8 a.m., followed by a parade that starts at 10 a.m., and a market that runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Long weekend fire bans and advisories for the area

You may want to take extra precautions before having that long weekend campfire.

Currently, a fire restriction is in place for Strathcona County. The notice was issued on Wednesday (Aug. 31).

“Lack of precipitation and hot weather has led to dry conditions. Fires are still allowed in Strathcona County. Please use caution when burning,” read a statement from the county.

Alberta lieutenant-governor says not a done deal she'll OK proposed sovereignty act

Alberta’s lieutenant-governor says it's not a done deal that she would automatically sign off on a proposal from a United Conservative Party leadership candidate to pass a bill aimed at ignoring federal laws and court rulings.

Salma Lakhani says she would seek legal advice as required, but says she is duty-bound to ensure the Constitution is followed.
