Foothills local named to the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council

Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) announced Tuesday that 13 members are returning and nine new members have been named to the Canadian Agricultural Youth Council (CAYC).

The new council will serve terms of 18 months. The CAYC is a consultative body to Minister MacAulay as well as the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada that will provide advice, enable ongoing dialogue on food-related challenges and opportunities, share information and best practices, and advise on policies and programs affecting the agriculture and agri-food sectors.

BGC Foothills Club to receive money from the Youth Suicide Prevention Grant program

The BGC Foothills Club (formerly known as the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Foothills) was one of 17 organizations across Alberta to get support from the Youth Suicide Prevention Grant program which was announced on Tuesday (Sept 10).

The grant program will distribute $4 million across the 17 organizations.

It's intended to help meet the needs of youth who may be at a higher risk and improve access for rural and Indigenous communities. That includes fostering strong community partnerships and safe spaces which will create a greater sense of belonging for the youth.

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump lay out different plans for America on debate stage

Kamala Harris pushed back on Donald Trump's claims about immigration and abortion as the two leaders met face-to-face for the first time on a debate stage in Philadelphia Tuesday.

The matchup marked a pivotal moment during the final sprint of a close race for the White House and saw Trump and Harris lay out starkly different visions for the future of America. 

While it started with a handshake, the debate quickly saw the Democratic vice-president and Republican former president zero in on each other's records. 

Not long left to submit an Okotoks' Got Talent audition tape

The deadline to submit a video audition for the Okotoks' Got Talent is fast approaching.

It's a new fundraiser event for the United Way & Okotoks Partnership.

Video auditions can be submitted until September 15, after which they'll be reviewed, with live auditions for selected acts planned for November.

The event itself is set for March 7, 2025, with tickets expected to go on sale soon.

They're calling for anyone and everyone with a talent or unique gift to submit auditions for the family-friendly event.

Tugboat starting game one for the Captains

Former Okotoks Dawg Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson is expected to start game one against the Dayton Dragons in MLB's minor league today (Sept. 10).

"Tugboat" had a terrific year with the Lake County Captains, posting a 1.90 ERA, and 174 strikeouts in 118.2 innings pitched. Wilkinson made 24 starts over the season.

The Midwest League's playoff series between the Captains and the Dragons will be a best-of-three matchup, with the first game played today, game two on Thursday, and a possible game three on Friday.

Another Bear Warning issued in K-Country following grizzly encounter

Another Bear Warning has been issued in Kananaskis County after a grizzly bear encounter.

According to Alberta Parks, a group of hikers was followed by a grizzly to the point where they had to use bear spray.

The warning was issued on Monday (Sept. 10) for the Commonwealth Creek area, including Mount Smuts, Mount Smutwood, and Birdwood Lakes.

It will remain in place until further notice.

A cool, rainy week in store for the Foothills

Southern Alberta and Foothills County are in for cooler conditions following a warm, sunny weekend.

The daytime highs in the 30s that were common last week will give way to more seasonable temperatures in the mid-teens to low tens.

We'll also see some rain starting mid-week.

"We are expecting another low-pressure system to develop in the high plains region which is going to bring those showers into the region predominantly between Wednesday night and Friday afternoon," says Environment and Climate Change Canada Meteorologist, Justin Shelley. 

High River's entertainment district not in the cards for now

After some serious thought, High River's Town Council isn't moving forward with the proposed entertainment district.

While the proposal had some positive feedback from residents, there were some issues surrounding the implementation of the bylaw, said Community Development Liaison Officer Jocelyn Dunsmore.

"Due to the issues around the implementation, the administration is recommending that the bylaw be defeated, and the initiative not be proceeded at this time," said Dunsmore at Town Council.

Federal grant will help municipalities stay intact

Municipalities across Canada are now able to apply for grants to help them mitigate the impact of both flooding and wildfire.

Intact Financial Corporation's 2024 Municipal Climate Resiliency Grants program helps municipalities, Indigenous communities, and registered charities fund projects that assess and address their exposure to extreme weather and its threats.
