Beavers home opener is here

The Weyburn Beavers will be back on the field at Tom Laing Park as the Western Canadian Baseball League returns after a 1,022-day hiatus. The Beavers last played on August 9th, 2019, when they lost in the quarterfinals to the Swift Current 57s.

The club missed the past two seasons due to COVID-19, and are now returning, along with the other ten teams in the league. Last season, the Alberta-based teams played a shortened season using local players.

Dusty Kerns looking forward to summer in Weyburn

The Weyburn Beavers are getting set for the 2022 campaign.

Taking the helm this year will be Dusty Kerns, who will replace Phil Curtis as the head coach of the squad. Curtis stepped down after the 2019 season, the last one played by the Beavers due to COVID-19.

Kerns may be a familiar name to people in Weyburn. He previously played here, splitting time between the outfield and behind home plate in 2013.

Beavers seeking host families for season beginning soon

Baseball players will be arriving soon in Weyburn to play for the Beavers, but team president Garnet Hansen told Discover Weyburn, they are still hoping to find more billets to accommodate them.

"I was hoping that we wouldn't be having this conversation 10 days before the players started arriving, but we are very desperately in need of host families right now, to house our players and coaches.”

He said they need to find 10 more spots to put players and coaches, which is significant.

Host families, he noted, are compensated.

Weyburn Beavers preparing for upcoming season

The Weyburn Beavers held their Annual General Meeting on Monday evening ahead of their upcoming season.

President of the team, Garnet Hanson said that they are doing well financially despite not playing for the past two years.

“We did a good job of not spending money and we did have some fundraisers, you know, 50/50s and a virtual dinner, so those were all successful, so we're coming out of it probably better than you could expect.”
