Between 10 to 20 cm of snow on the way for Cochrane region
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a Snowfall Warning for Rocky View County near Cochrane, as a significant winter weather system moves into the Alberta foothills tonight.
The warning states that rain will transition to snow overnight as temperatures drop, with the snow expected to be heavy and wet during the initial stages.
Up to 10 centimetres of snow is anticipated by morning, with additional accumulations on Monday potentially pushing totals beyond 20 centimetres.
New record set as two million vote on first day of advance polls: Elections Canada
The federal Liberals and NDP both released their costed campaign platforms Saturday as Elections Canada reported record turnout in the first day of advanced polls.
Nearly two million people showed up to cast a ballot on Friday, the first of four days for advanced voting in the federal election.
Elections Canada said in a social media post it will be making adjustments over the coming days to handle the high traffic after many voters were met with long lineups at polling stations.

Main Street overflowed with people and emotion on April 18 as some 500 came together for the annual Walk of the Cross—an enduring Good Friday tradition in Cochrane that united the community in faith, reflection, and remembrance.
Families, church groups and individuals of all ages came together to retrace the path of Christ’s crucifixion, carrying wooden crosses, singing hymns, and pausing for prayer and scripture readings from the Gospel of Luke at 12 stations along the way.

On April 11, the boys’ and girls’ teams split into four squads to play 7s touch rugby—dressed to the nines. The teams rallied to surpass their fundraising goal of $900 to support two athletes with a few extra activities during the week.
Advance voting begins in Cochrane with strong turnout
A steady stream of Cochrane voters filed into polling stations on the first day of advance voting in the federal election.
Both the Lions Event Centre and Wills Community Hall (formerly Frank Wills Memorial Hall) saw lineups of eager voters.
Advance polling stations will be open today until 9 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, April 19; Sunday, April 20; and Monday, April 21.
Alberta child names future RCMP pup in national contest
One of the RCMP’s newest four-legged recruits now has a name, and it’s thanks to a young Albertan.
“Action” was one of 13 names chosen through the RCMP’s 2025 Name the Puppy contest, and the winning submission came from Alberta’s own Chance Jerome.
The contest invited kids aged four to 14 from across Canada to help name the first puppies born this year at the RCMP’s Police Dog Service Training Centre (PDSTC) in Innisfail.

Supreme Court of Canada clarifies treatment of student loan debt under bankruptcy law
The Supreme Court of Canada says a person must wait seven years after completely finishing their post-secondary studies before they can be released from student loan debt under the federal bankruptcy law.
The top court's decision came Thursday in the case of Izabela Piekut, who received government student loans in the course of three university programs from 1987 to 2003.
Piekut later returned to school and earned a master's degree in 2009 without the help of additional student loans.
