Region's top doctor confident in the 2021-2022 school year

The true sign of summer's end is here as today marks the first day of school for students, teachers, school staff, and parents.

Students will be returning to the classroom this school year after mixing between online and in-class learning last year. 

The Medical Officer of Health of the Northwestern Health Unit Dr. Kit Young Hoon spoke on what kids and teachers can expect to return to school.

"We are working with school boards and schools to ensure public health measures are implemented in the school environment,” said Young Hoon

Slight drop in active COVID-19 cases in Grande Prairie, currently at 477

As of August 31, 2021 the City of Grande Prairie has 477 active cases of COVID-19, and the County of Grande Prairie has 186 cases.

Cases of COVID-19 across the rest of the province sit at 12,290 active cases. 

Hospitalizations are currently at 465, and a total of 107 Albertans are in intensive care receiving treatment. 

September 1 sees another 1,315 new COVID-19 cases in Alberta

The province has recorded another 1,315 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, September 1.

Hospitalizations saw another 34 patients admitted in the past 24 hours.

The total hospitalizations are 465 with 372 or 80 per cent of the patients being unvaccinated, 16 are partially vaccinated and 77 are fully vaccinated.

ICU admissions increased by one case to 107.

Another eight deaths have been reported bringing the total in the province to 2,383.

There are 12,290 active cases in the province with a positivity rate of over 10 per cent.

Manitoba sees 57 new COVID cases, all in Winnipeg or Southern Health

The number of people currently needing intensive care due to COVID-19 has lowered.

As of Wednesday morning, one dozen people are in Manitoba's intensive care unit due to COVID-19, with three of those being active cases. I total, there are 65 people in the hospital, with 22 of those people having active cases and the rest no longer are infectious.

There are 57 new COVID-19 cases, with 22 of those cases from Winnipeg and 25 from Southern Health-Santé Sud. Of the 58,759 total cases, 495 of those are active.

September 1: Two new COVID-19 cases discovered

The Northwestern Health Unit has confirmed two new positive COVID-19 test results in the region.

The newly found cases were discovered in the Rainy River Health Region. 

Follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started according to protocol. Anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly.

Currently, there are five active cases connected to the NWHU catchment area. Three active cases in the Sioux Lookout Health Region, and two active cases in the Rainy River Health Region.

Edmonton makes masks mandatory for indoor public spaces

Those making a trip to Edmonton will have to mask up or wear a face-covering in any indoor public space starting on Friday (Sept.3).

Edmonton city council is reinstating its masking bylaw for all indoor public spaces, including grocery stores, restaurants, recreation facilities and retail stores.

"Medical experts have made it clear that we are in the fourth wave of COVID-19 and I applaud city council for making this decision to help keep Edmontonians safe," said mayor Don Iveson.

43 percent of eligible Grande Prairie residents fully vaccinated; active cases at 480

As of August 30, 2021 the City of Grande Prairie has 480 active cases of COVID-19, and the County of Grande Prairie has 193 cases.

Cases of COVID-19 across the rest of the province also continue to climb. Alberta now has 11,660 active cases of the virus. 

Hospitalizations have risen to 431, and a total of 106 Albertans are in intensive care receiving treatment.

A day below 1,000 for new cases, but hospitalizations continue to rise

Alberta saw 920 new cases on Tuesday, August 31 with a positivity rate of twelve per cent. 

Hospitalizations rose by 30 cases to 431 and ICU admissions increased by eight for a total of 106.

There are now 11,660 active cases in Alberta.

Sadly, another four deaths have been reported for a total of 2,375.

The one-dose vaccination percentage rate has increased slightly to reach the 78 per cent mark.

While 69.8 per cent of the provincial population is now fully immunized. 

Alberta Health Services will require all employees to be immunized for COVID-19

Alberta Health Services (AHS) will require all employees and contracted healthcare providers – including physicians and other frontline healthcare workers – to be fully immunized for COVID-19, by October 31, 2021. 

This necessary step is required to protect patients, vulnerable and immuno-compromised Albertans, and anyone who visits or works at any AHS site, including healthcare facilities.
