An agricultural ecologist makes the case for building the supply managed model rather than losing it in trade talks.

A Canadian agricultural ecologist says the supply management model is one worth building on, not destroying.

Claude Caldwell, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University and a former federal researcher, said regional and rural-urban divides have developed that send mixed messages to politicians and negotiators, and he worries about upcoming trade negotiations.

Alberta invests $9.3 million in the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services Unit

Alberta's livestock producers will benefit from increased funding for the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine Diagnostic Services Unit. 

Agriculture and Irrigation Minister RJ Sigurdson says the government is investing $9.5 million over three years, with $3.5 million being allotted each year. The funding is earmarked for the continued development of a full-service veterinary diagnostic laboratory in Calgary. 

He says the province has been supporting this project since 2020 and has been closely monitoring its impact as it continues to grow. 

Additional temporary closure added to Main Street today

Another section of Main Street will be out of commission beginning today. The temporary closure will impact the Main Street's 300 block for both vehicle and foot traffic to allow for the excavation and repair the road and sidewalk following a water main break that took place in March.  If weather permits, the City expects work to be completed by May 29.

The Carolina Hurricanes have lived to play another day. The 'Canes surprised Florida 3-0 in Stanley Cup playoff action last night.  Frederik Andersen stopped all 20 shots he faced for the shutout. The Panthers still lead the series 3 games-to-one.

The Edmonton Oilers look to take a 3-1 series lead in the Western Conference final tonight when they host the Dallas Stars.

At the Memorial Cup, the WHL champion Medicine Hat Tigers beat Moncton 3-1, improving to 2 and 0. The Tigers play the London Knights tonight with the winner getting a bye into Sunday's championship game.

City Hall extending public access hours effective July 2

Moose Jaw City Hall’s public access hours will be extended to 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., effective July 2. 

Coun. Carla DeLaurier introduced a motion during Monday night’s city council meeting to resume in-person public business hours. Her original motion proposed hours of 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays. It also proposed funding the added cost of Commissionaires from vacancy or procurement savings totalling $17,500. 

Seen any suspicious cattle-movers? 41 cattle possibly stolen from local farm

A local farm family is asking for the public’s help after 41 cows and their calves went missing from their pastureland near the North Portal Grid Road, south of Highway 18 in the Frobisher/Hirsch area.

Amy and Slade Mutton, who operate a small family farm in the area, say the cattle likely went missing sometime in the last one to two weeks. The animals are a mix of red and black cows, all branded with S-M.

The Muttons believe the cattle were stolen.

King Charles, Queen Camilla arrive in Canada ahead of throne speech

King Charles arrived in Canada Tuesday afternoon for a short visit that will include reading the speech from the throne in Parliament.

The highly symbolic visit is happening as Canada copes with U.S. President Donald Trump's attempts to upend global trade with tariffs and his repeated calls for Canada's annexation.

The Canadian Armed Forces plane carrying the King and Queen Camilla landed in Ottawa shortly after 1 p.m.
