Newcomers face a myriad of challenges when arriving in a new country. And nobody knows this as well as those who have lived it.  

Driven by his own experience as an immigrant, Pastor Emmanuel Ige founded African Immigrant Settlement in Canada (AISIC) in 2009. His son John Ige has joined the growing NGO in its mission to empower newcomers by providing them with key tools, resources, and supports, and its vision to create a welcoming, inclusive community where every newcomer feels supported, valued, and confident in their ability to achieve their full potential in Canada. 

Homeowners of Duncairn Dam ask for negotiation in irrigation expansion

Many property owners in the Duncairn Dam area have become concerned about their property values as talks about irrigation expansion continue.  

The Duncairn Dam Irrigation Project, as members from the Homeowners of Duncairn Dam Association explained, seeks an additional 4,000 acres of irrigation to be supplied by the reservoir, in addition to the 16000 already allocated. 

September is for Seniors at Mil-Jeanne Flowers & Axcenz!

Throughout the month of September, Mil-Jeanne Flowers & Axcenz will be giving back to the community, by donating 10% of the proceeds from all flower sales to Portage Service for Seniors.

Funds raised from flower purchases in September will go to programs at Portage Services for Seniors, such as: Meals on Wheels, transportation programs, and Lifeline Canada, which is an emergency system for seniors who live on their own.

These programs help increase security and pave a positive path forward for seniors living independently.

Grunthal Livestock Auction Mart celebrating 50 years of sales, community and change

In the 50 years since it first began serving southeast Manitoba with cattle sales, Grunthal Livestock Auction Mart has seen a whole lot of change – and the steadfast support of the surrounding community. 

“The way we market livestock is not the way it was done even 25 years ago,” says Brad Kehler, who joined the auction mart in 2016. “We’ve had a lot of changes over the years, but we’re always trying to keep on the cutting edge of things in the industry. It’s been great.” 

A hot lunch for the Renas Farm: Grain Rush

Wrapping up week one of Grain Rush today with a KFC delivery to the Renas farm east of Cedoux, where they farm wheat, lentils, peas, flax, and oats  

Tyson said seeding conditions were near perfect, but hail and then more rain caused major havoc a couple of weeks ago.

He added that harvest operations are well underway, but is going smooth-ish. Barring a few kinks, nothing major has broken down yet.
