St. Joseph's Hospital announces MRI Project is officially moving forward

St. Joseph’s Hospital in Estevan is announcing that their much-anticipated MRI project is officially moving forward. Last evening, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation Board of Directors approved the purchase agreements for the new MRI system and the construction project.

The hospital subsequently sent out purchase orders this morning to Siemens Healthcare Canada for the MRI system and to SDI Canada for the modular MRI Cassette room and construction project.

Estevan sees drier March with temperatures as expected for spring

After some chilly winds swept through the southeast over the winter, the first month of spring brought some balmier temperatures to the southeast. That's the record for Environment Canada, which took a look at all the numbers they gathered over the month of March.

Industry happy with consumer and industrial carbon taxes taken off in Saskatchewan

Industries and consumers are seeing lower prices as a pair of carbon taxes have been lifted in Saskatchewan. The consumer carbon tax was lifted by the federal government on April 1st, and was quickly followed up by the provincial government lifting the industrial carbon tax.

Economic Development Regina CEO Chris Lane says that the lifting of those restrictions is a step in the right direction.

The Estevan Public Library is kicking off April with a series of engaging events for all ages, highlighted by a creative Easter reading challenge, a popular book sale, and a family escape room adventure.

Southern Plains Co-op raises over $8,000 for STARS for Fuel Up Day

The Southern Plains Co-op raised money on Friday to help the STARS Air Ambulance in a community fundraiser.

Their 2025 Fuel Up Day brought in $8,298.88 from the Estevan community to support the STARS Air Ambulance.

That money was raised by purchases of special edition helicopter cookies, 5c/litre of fuel sold at the gas bars on Friday, March 28th and donations collected at the tills from March 17 - 31st. 

Since 2022, Southern Plains Co-op has raised $43,500 for STARS Air Ambulance.

Bearcats turn seasonal effort into playoff success in weekend win

The U13 A Estevan Bearcats managed to clinch the provincial title over the weekend as they took on the Martinsville Marauders. After losing the first game of the series, the Bearcats needed to win their second game on the weekend and win the 10-minute mini-game that would act as a tiebreaker.

Head Coach Wade Grimes says the team had quite the comeback to win the series.

Canadian Foodgrains Bank assisting with hunger crisis in Sudan

A spokesperson for Canadian Foodgrains Bank says they are very grateful for a recent funding announcement by our federal government. The Canadian government is providing a $4 million grant for Canadian Foodgrains Bank to address the growing hunger crisis in Sudan. 

According to Canadian Foodgrains Bank, nearly 25 million people in Sudan are facing acute hunger since the outbreak of civil war in April 2023. That makes up more than half the population. As many as 640,000 people are already experiencing famine-like conditions in five identified areas.

Freedom Convoy organizers Lich, Barber to hear verdict in mischief trial

Freedom Convoy organizers Tamara Lich and Chris Barber are set to hear a verdict today in the joint trial over their roles in the mass protest against pandemic health measures that rolled into Ottawa more than three years ago.

Lich and Barber were both charged with mischief, intimidation and counselling others to break the law in relation to their roles in the 2022 protest that drew thousands of demonstrators to Ottawa for three weeks.

Their trial wrapped up in September after hearing 45 days of evidence and legal arguments.

Canada among few countries exempt from Trump's new tariffs, existing duties remain

Prime Minister Mark Carney will address reporters shortly after the White House declared both Canada and Mexico exempt from new reciprocal tariffs announced today by U.S. President Donald Trump.

A fact sheet from Trump's office says goods imported under the existing continental trade deal, known as CUSMA, will not face tariffs, while those outside the deal will see a 10 per cent tariff.

Canada was left off a lengthy list Trump unveiled this afternoon showing the tariff levels most other countries will face starting Thursday.

Nominees announced for Southeast Saskatchewan Women of Distinction Awards

Women making a difference in their workplaces, communities, and industries were celebrated Wednesday as the nominees for the Southeast Saskatchewan Women of Distinction Awards were announced at a high tea luncheon.

This year’s theme, Lesson in Leadership, was introduced by Becky Cassidy, chairperson of the awards. She emphasized that leadership is about setting boundaries and recognizing that people cannot pour from an empty cup.
