SECPSD schools raise over $52,000 from Terry Fox events last year
A recent meeting by the South East Cornerstone Public School Division looked at some of their totals from the Terry Fox fundraising runs, walks, and events last year to see just how much was raised.
In total, 28 school facilities held events, with the Terry Fox Foundation saying that 2024 was a banner year for fundraising in the pursuit of cancer cures.
Deanna Holowachuk, who manages the school runs for the foundation, said schools across the country raised close to $14 million for cancer research.
Four brothers, one theatre: The Littlefield legacy at the Orpheum
It's been a week since the Orpheum Theatre opened its doors to the public once again after a devastating flood and sewer backup last fall shuttered the business. Patrons have returned to enjoy the movies they've been waiting to watch on the big screen. Before you sit in your seat, you probably approach the concession first to grab popcorn and some drinks. That's where you would've met Kegan Littlefield, who carries a bit of legacy on his shoulders.
He's one of a long line of Littlefields who have made it a tradition to work at the famed local theatre.
Liberals poised to table bill to knock down internal trade barriers
The Liberal government is poised to table landmark legislation to break down internal trade barriers and increase labour mobility within Canada.
The government has put a bill on the House of Commons notice paper that could potentially be tabled as early as today.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has pledged to break down internal trade barriers by Canada Day to create one economy — although the time left on the parliamentary calendar suggests the legislation will not gain Royal Assent by the time the House rises for the summer.
Years after it was pitched, Canada is still waiting for a national disaster agency
In 2023, as Canada suffered through its worst-ever wildfire season, the federal government was looking at creating a national disaster response agency.
Two years later, the country is again facing another summer of wildfires. There is still no sign of such an agency, though governments are tapping the private sector to help with evacuations.
Ali Asgary, a York University professor of disaster and emergency management, said the work to establish a national agency is "unfortunately … not going as fast as our crises are going."

The Estevan Market Mall has found a solution to a 23,000 square foot problem as a new tenant has been found for their former Peavy Mart space. At the start of the year, it was announced that all Peavy Mart locations would be closing down, with the company citing several factors, including record-low consumer confidence, increased operating costs and continued disruptions to the supply chain.
Since then, the Estevan Market Mall has been looking for a new option for the area, and that was announced late in May on a Facebook post from a Regina-based company.
