Liberals, Conservatives talk co-operation but trade jabs as Parliament returns

After talking up the prospect of cross-party collaboration in the House of Commons, Liberal and Conservative MPs wasted little time after Parliament resumed Monday before reverting to partisan attacks over housing and the cost of living.

The tone was set early Monday afternoon, when the first-ever question period exchange between Prime Minister Mark Carney and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre began cordially before turning belligerent.

Saskatchewan Premier Moe says hopeful for progress after canola meeting in China

Premier Scott Moe, back in Saskatchewan after a trip to China to try and resolve a trade dispute, said Monday he’s hopeful they can find a solution.

Moe told reporters he and Prime Minister Mark Carney's parliamentary secretary Kody Blois met last week with Chinese officials who oversee an agency responsible for imposing steep tariffs on Canadian canola products.

They also met with Li Chenggang, the international trade negotiator with China's Ministry of Commerce, and other industry officials.

Reported police impersonation near Midale under RCMP investigation

RCMP in Weyburn are investigating a report of someone impersonating a police officer after a driver encountered a vehicle with flashing emergency lights near Midale.

Police say the report came in around 10:40 p.m. on Sept. 13. An individual told investigators they were driving on a grid road when a granite grey heavy-duty truck, believed to be a 2000s-model Chevrolet, pulled up behind them with red and blue lights flashing.

Both vehicles slowed down before the truck sped off.

Enduro races moved to Saturday as speedway hopes for a dry and well-attended finish

With some recent rainfall over the weekend, the Enduro races at the Estevan Motor Speedway ended up getting pushed back by a week. Those races usually cap off the racing season for the speedway, being their final set of races for the season.

President Brad Pierson says they cancelled to keep the experience dry for the spectators.

"On Saturday, we were really hoping to get it in, but we didn't want to make a huge mess out of our parking lot and our pits, and the track probably would have been fine, but we also didn't want zero fans in the stands."

Estevan Police investigate theft, damage, and safety concerns across the city

Estevan police responded to a variety of calls this week, including vehicle collisions, reports of damage and theft, and incidents involving individuals breaching release conditions.

On September 10, police received a request for a well-being check on a woman in Estevan. Officers attended and confirmed she was safe and well.

That same day, members investigated a single-vehicle collision with a light pole on Kensington Avenue. No injuries were reported, and alcohol was not a factor.

MADD keeps Estevan focused on sober driving

Connie Hagel, community leader for Mothers Against Drunk Driving and a board member for MADD Canada representing Saskatchewan and Manitoba, says the organization continues to play an active role in Estevan.

“We follow everything that MADD Canada does,” said Hagel. “Closer to Christmas, we do the Red Ribbon Project, we do police checks, we are out there with the police officers. I still put out my signs, impaired driver signs caught here, and they seem to disappear just as quickly as I put them up, but that is okay. Somebody is looking at them.”

Elections Canada to launch review following issues with special ballots

Elections Canada is launching a probe into problems with special ballots in the last federal election.

"We really have to look at the controls in place to make sure that they are sufficient," and make improvements where possible, Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault told reporters at a press conference on Parliament Hill on Monday.

Plans for the review were outlined on Monday in the agency's report on the 45th general election held on April 28. The report promises a "comprehensive review" that will examine training, control mechanisms and processes."

Estevan Minor Football teams show grit in weekend matchups

Estevan’s minor football teams were busy this past weekend, competing in games both at home and on the road, and showing plenty of determination across all age groups.

On Friday, the ECS Elecs travelled to Yorkton, ultimately falling 45-13. Despite Yorkton’s strong running game and solid defence, Estevan was able to make big plays, scoring on a blocked punt and an interception. Turner Petterson found the end zone off the blocked punt, while Truman Ciepliski scored on the interception. The team pulled ahead in the second half, showing resilience and determination.
