Weyburn Mayor describes shock and disbelief in community following fatal shooting

In the wake of a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a local woman last Friday, Weyburn Mayor Jeff Richards says the community is reeling with "sadness and disbelief". He described Weyburn as a "very tight-knit city" where the unsettling incident is impacting a lot of people. 

Premier, Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Guthrie clash over Progressive Conservative name

Premier Danielle Smith and Independent Airdrie-Cochrane MLA Peter Guthrie clashed Monday over the Progressive Conservative name, with Guthrie alleging the United Conservatives tried to block his revival bid with what he described as a second cease-and-desist order and Smith defending the name as a United Conservative legacy brand.

Saskatchewan RCMP urge seatbelt use, caution in orange zones

The Saskatchewan RCMP is issuing a stark reminder to drivers to buckle up, noting that approximately half of the fatal collisions this year have involved people being ejected from a vehicle for not wearing a seatbelt. Drivers are also being reminded to obey posted speed limits in construction zones to ensure worker safety. 

'Doctor Prescribes' three doses of rock and roll at the Lyric

Three Swift Current bands took to the stage at the Lyric Theatre over the weekend.  

Rib Rash, Tombstone Whiskey, and Margaret’s Medicine performed as part of the ‘Doctor Prescribes’ show. 

Travis Steinley, frontman for Margaret’s Medicine, was excited to see a large turnout for the show. 

“The night went very well,” said Steinley. “There wasn’t a seat left to be sat in.” 

Bottle Drive Boosts Fundraising for Aubrey’s Medical Journey

A local family is seeing an incredible amount of support as they work toward raising funds for their daughter Aubrey’s upcoming surgery. Kimberly shared that the family’s recent bottle drive on September 6 was a big success, with more than 20 people donating bottles and cans. The drive brought in $840, adding to the growing total needed to cover surgery and therapy costs.

EFR lists off recent calls in the community over the past week

Estevan Fire Rescue has answered a number of calls over the past week, helping out with crashes, fire alarms, and more.

On September 8th, crews were dispatched to a motorcycle vs pedestrian incident at 5:45 p.m. On scene, crews found the persons involved were in the care of EMS and EFR assistance was not required. The Extent of injuries or damages to property is currently unknown.

SaskAbilities Week celebrates inclusivity and hard work in Swift Current

SaskAbilities Week is marking some major milestones not only locally, but for the organization as a whole.

This year is the 60th anniversary of SaskAbilities opening its operations in Swift Current. It's also the 75th anniversary of the group as a whole. Throughout that history, their focus on caring for individuals experiencing disabilities or life-changing conditions has never shaken. 

To commemorate this, SaskAbilities is officially proclaiming, with approval from the City of Swift Current, September 14 to September 20 as SaskAbilities Week.

Volunteers paint sidewalks to beautify Airdrie Legion

On Sunday, several Airdronians volunteered at the Royal Canadian Legion #288 in Airdrie, preparing it for Remembrance Day.

Volunteers took time to paint red insignias on the sidewalks outside of the Legion, Jason Hoffman, past president of the Legion, explained.

"These are artist-inspired creations, and it's to help raise awareness and beautify our branch."

He explained they have been painting the sidewalks with the insignia for a number of years.

"It's all about remembering our veterans and what they've done for our country."

Unity Healthcare workers rally for fair wages and safe staffing

Health-care workers in Unity are calling on the public to support them as they push for fair wages, safe staffing levels and recognition of their contributions to the system.

Jessica Raycraft, a licensed practical nurse at the Unity Health Centre and member of SEIU-West, said employees will be holding an information picket on Sept. 16 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Co-op service station in Unity.

Community comes together for Arcola Craft and Trade Show

The Arcola Craft and Trade Show welcomed hundreds of shoppers this weekend, filling the hall with vendors, families, and plenty of community spirit.

Organizer Gwen Taylor said she was thrilled with the response from both vendors and the public. “Today we have 77 vendors, and I am so pleased with that. They are happy, lots of people coming through to shop, so I am really happy with it,” she said.
