Nighthawks' “Chase the Ace” fundraiser ends with nearly $50K winner
After more than 40 weeks of "Chase the Ace," the Niverville Nighthawks have crowned the winner of nearly $50,000.
The fundraiser for the local hockey team has been held Monday nights at Smitty’s in Niverville, inviting participants to test their luck drawing the right card for a chance at a weekly cash prize—or the jackpot.
That jackpot was finally claimed on July 28, when Joe Strebley of Winnipeg took home $46,483 plus $3,330 in weekly winnings.
Ray Dowse, vice president of the Nighthawks, says Smitty's was packed out for the event.

A vibrant blend of art and community spirit filled the Portage Learning and Literacy Centre (PLLC) last week during a special Paint Night for women and seniors.

The Manitoba Wildfire Service (MWS) says high winds and dry conditions are creating a very high fire danger across much of our province today.
A mandatory evacuation order is in effect for the community of Cormorant effective at 1 pm, Tuesday. This evacuation will affect approximately 300 residents.
For the safety of both evacuees and frontline and firefighting personnel, the province is reminding Manitobans not to enter areas under a mandatory evacuation until local authorities identify the situation is safe and evacuees are able to return.
RCMP seeking assistance in locating missing person, last seen in Southern Alberta
The Codiac Regional RCMP are seeking the public's help to locate a missing 50-year-old from Moncton, N.B.
Jason Kinney was last seen on May 16, at approximately 8 a.m. in Crowsnest Pass.
Kinney was on his way from British Columbia to Saskatchewan and lived in a motor home.
Update: Fort Macleod missing woman located safe
The Fort Macleod RCMP were seeking help from the public in the search for a missing woman.
59-year-old Wilma White Man Left was last seen in Fort Macleod on July 25, and there had been concern for her wellbeing.
Anyone with White Man Left's whereabouts was encouraged to contact the Fort Macleod RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
The Fort Macleod RCMP has now reported that Wilma White Man Left has been located safe, and the RCMP thanks everyone for their assistance.
Darren Hagen falls for Eastend during Wallace Stegner House stay
The Wallace Stegner House is bidding farewell to its 2025 guest artist in Darren Hagen.
The Edmonton-based artist spent the month of July in Eastend, doing a live-in working stay at the Wallace Stegner House, where he not only worked on his playwriting but held workshops and talks with community members and fellow artists.
Hagen was thrilled with this most recent stay and honoured to have been brought back.
"I fell in love with the place (during a prior stay)," said Hagen. "This time (...) I felt like I had been accepted by the community."
City of Brandon offers tree planting program for homeowners
The City of Brandon is pleased to introduce the Tree Planting Reimbursement Program, an initiative aimed at cultivating a greener, more resilient urban landscape across all neighbourhoods in our city.
Through this program, Brandon homeowners can receive up to $300 in reimbursement for eligible tree purchases planted on their private residential property.

City of Red Deer to allow free downtown parking with handicap placard
Beginning August 1, individuals displaying a valid handicap placard will be permitted to park for free in any on-street parking stall in Red Deer, not just those designated as accessible.
This change is intended to make parking more convenient and flexible for accessible parkers and comes in response to feedback from residents and visitors.
“We heard from our community that accessible parkers needed more flexibility when parking downtown,” said Jill Manning, Parking and Licensing Supervisor.
Flaring scheduled for Wednesday in R.M. of Lomond: SaskEnergy
If drivers and residents in the R.M. of Lomond see a 40-foot flame being emitted approximately five kilometres northeast of the hamlet of Colgate this Wednesday, July 30th, it is coming from a flare stack temporarily attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure.
This is due to a controlled natural gas flaring at the TransGas station site, located within the RM of Lomond, west of Highway 35. Flaring will take place from 6:30 to 10 a.m. tomorrow, subject to change based on operating requirements.
