Snow Lake orders evacuation as wildfires merge into massive blaze
The Town of Snow Lake has issued a mandatory evacuation order, requiring all residents to leave by noon on Saturday, June 7, as a massive wildfire threat looms.
The order follows a prior evacuation alert and was announced at noon Friday.
Approximately 1,100 people live in the northern Manitoba community, which is now under threat from three wildfires that have merged into a single, massive blaze. According to the City of Flin Flon, the fire spans an estimated 140 kilometres in length and five kilometres in width.
Swift Current resident anxiously watching Flin Flon fires
As wildfires rage up north, a Swift Current resident and Flin Flon native is watching anxiously.
Carrie Davis grew up in Flin Flon, and has been keeping a close eye on the updates.
"It's very stressful," Davis said. "Every day, the news is different. Last weekend, the mayor had said it was make it or break it for the town. Then we felt we were in the clear, but then we lost Denare Beach.
Manitoba premier eyes northern development that could include a pipeline
Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew promoted his province Friday as the route for a future trade corridor, which could include a pipeline, in order to get goods from Western Canada to overseas markets.
"The politics are (that) something needs to get built in Western Canada. I think everybody understands that," Kinew told a breakfast meeting of the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce.
Foothills firefighters tackle 1,370 stairs for cancer care
Firefighters from across the Foothills are gearing up for the annual Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge on June 8.

Fill pools, other water-related tasks before conservation takes effect: City of Weyburn
As part of the City of Weyburn's ongoing upgrades at the Water Treatment Plant, scheduled maintenance will be performed next week requiring temporarily reducing reservoir capacity.
In a press release Friday afternoon, the City stated that this work supports important regulatory monitoring by the Water Security Agency and helps ensure safe, high-quality drinking water for our community.
To ensure daily water needs can continue to be met throughout this period, the City is asking residents and businesses to reduce non-essential water use beginning on Friday, June 13th.
Manitoba Health identifies Grunthal high school as measles exposure site
Manitoba Health has identified two new measles exposure sites in the province, including Green Valley School in Grunthal.
According to a provincial notice issued Friday, individuals at the school on May 20 between 8:50 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., and again between 2:15 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., may have been exposed to the virus.
