Rocky Mountain House to not hold a by-election

The Town of Rocky Mountain House will not hold a by-election to fill the position of mayor. 

Following the resignation of Debbie Baich in August, the position was left vacant, and Deputy Mayor Marley Capraro was appointed as acting mayor.   

The town council agreed to request a by-election extension from the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Ric McIver.  

Outlook RCMP responding to major collision on Highway #15

Outlook RCMP are advising caution after a serious collision on Highway #15. 

Earlier today around 10:15 a.m., RCMP responded to the collision in the RM of Rudy. 

No details have been released about the nature of the incident, only that traffic is being re-routed in both directions. This matter is under active investigation. 

Motorists in the area should expect delays. Travellers can check the Highway Hotline for updates. 

Astonishing precipitation totals captured across southwest

The two-part severe weather system that hit southern Saskatchewan in the last 48 hours has left some staggering rainfall totals for the southwest.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, Cypress Hills emerged from storms, collecting the most precipitation in the province, at 90.4 millimetres. Klintonel, 25 kilometres north of Eastend, received 64.5 millimetres, Lucky Lake registered 59.7 millimetres, and Swift Current recorded 44.4 millimetres.

Strathmore Aquatic Centre shuts down for maintenance

After a busy summer full of swimming the Aquatic Centre has shut down for its annual maintenance.

Crews with the Town of Strathmore have been working hard to ensure it is up to standards.

"Many of these cleaning and preventative maintenance duties can’t be performed while the building is in use. Full equipment shut-off is required for jobs like tile replacement and drain replacement, making shut down the perfect time to complete these tasks," says the town in a Facebook post.

According to staff, they will let residents know when the pool reopens.

Winkler Fire Department conducts water rescue for stranded driver

Winkler Fire Department had the opportunity to test out its water rescue training Wednesday morning at a call inside the city.

The call came in at 10am, and Chief Richard Paetzold says crews found a vehicle stranded in floodwaters that had overtopped a portion of South Railway Avenue. The driver was unable to exit and wade through the water.

Firefighters deployed a water rescue device to float the driver to higher ground.

There were no injuries in the incident.

SRC's rare earth metal milestone a launching-off point for emerging industry in province

The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) hit an important milestone over the summer, with their Rare Earth Processing Facility producing the first commercial-scale rare earth metals in North America.

Their creation of 10 tonnes of neodymium-praseodymium (NdPr) metals per month represents the best production on the continent, with the facility using materials from clients worldwide.

Munroe Optimistic as Cattle Prices Hold Steady and Feed Abundant

"It has been absolutely incredible this summer. Here we are in mid-September and the grass looks greener than June a lot of years," says Killarney Auction Mart's Allan Munroe. 

"Hay is far easier to source... there is lots of good hay out there with lots of volume.  The cows, it looks like are going to have pasture for quite a while yet," he adds. "The grain prices are certainly to the benefit of the cattle feeder right now."
