Special Olympics Weyburn celebrates success at AGM

Special Olympics Weyburn (SOW) held their annual general meeting this past Wednesday. According to their release, they saw successes across various fields.  

Two bowling teams comprised of ten bowlers attended the annual Bob Pedde Tournament in Saskatoon. Three athletes brought home singles medals. Two athletes attended swim meets in Saskatoon and Regina, bringing home medals from both events.  

Another SOW athlete made Team Sask in the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary AB for bowling. The team took home a silver medal.  

Flyway or the highway: Saskatchewan's birds wing it south

Every year, during the tail end of summer, it is hard to not notice the tremendous amount of activity in the skies above Saskatchewan as thousands of birds begin their annual pilgrimage from their summer habitats southward to more favourable winter climates. 

Kristin Martin, Conservation Science and Planning Manager with Nature Conservancy of Canada, tells us about this yearly phenomenon. 

Nose Creek Bridges see another delay

The two Nose Creek Park bridges that are being replaced have now seen another delay.

Ryan Couillard, a Project Manager for the City of Airdrie who spoke with DiscoverAirdrie explained they should now be done close to September 30.

"We've got some site work that's left, some pathway paving, landscaping, that sort of stuff. It was unfortunately affected by the rain that we had last week."

According to Couillard, the paving started back up again on Tuesday and the rest of the site work is taking place the rest of this week.

Bella Brave recognized for impact on Sask., and the world

Known and adored globally through sharing her medical journey via social media, Swift Current's Bella ‘Brave’ Thomson is being honoured posthumously with a prestigious award. 

The 10-year-old passed away on July 14, and exactly a month later her mother Kyla received word that she would be given a King Charles III’s Coronation Medal. 

New integrated health center in Airdrie approved—But when will it open?

The Office of the Minister of Health has said that no decisions have been made regarding timelines or operational details for a newly approved business proposal by One Health Associate Medical in Airdrie for a new primary and acute care facility.

"Alberta’s government is currently working with One Health Airdrie to finalize details as we work to increase acute care and primary care services in the community," a written email statement from the Ministry added.

It was a record-breaking year for the Okotoks Terry Fox Run

Okotoks saw a great turnout for the 44th annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday (Sept. 15), both with the number of participants and funds raised.

This was Steve Preece’s first time organizing the Okotoks run, and it was held in a new location.

He says Sheep River Park proved to be a great starting point for the run, especially with the weather turning out the way it did.

"The new site proved to be terrific in the sense that it's a lovely setting, lots of room for people to gather, and it's a pretty run to do."

Locally shot FX series picked up an Emmy over the weekend

The locally shot FX series Fargo season five picked up one Emmy over the weekend.

While they were nominated in 15 categories the series only picked up one Emmy this time.

Lamorne Morris, who plays State Trooper Whitley 'Whit' Farr, won an Emmy for 'Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.'

Season five was shot in and around High River and Okotoks as well as a few other Alberta locations.

Fill a bag for the Okotoks Food Bank this weekend

The Okotoks Food Bank's largest food drive of the year is coming up.

The annual event is organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and officially began on Wednesday (Sept. 18) when they left bags on people's front doors to be filled with donations for the food bank.

One of the coordinators of the food drive, Rob Court, says his team will be dropping a bag and an instruction tag off at every home in Okotoks, as well as the Heritage Pointe and Artesia neighbourhoods.

Local Lunch & Learn leaps back into action with feel-good presentation

The Swift Current Museum held its first Lunch & Learn of the season yesterday afternoon, highlighting empowerment through education and the journey to find it.

More than a dozen community members attended the informational event which took place over the noon hour with lunch and an opportunity for discussion.

Swift Current Museum to feature "powerful" military exhibition

The Swift Current Museum will soon welcome a captivating military exhibition, The Wounded, which showcases the mental and physical journey of today's veterans. 

The Wounded, from the Canadian War Museum in cooperation with the Legion Magazine, will be opening in Swift Current on Monday, October 7.

Melissa Shaw, general manager of cultural and aquatic services at the Swift Current Museum, noted that the exhibition will be geared more towards adults and older children, as they will have to be able to read.
