New washrooms open at the beach: Nickle Lake Regional Park

Beach-goers were able to enjoy using the new washrooms at Nickle Lake Regional Park, which were opened up to the public before the weekend. Some of the other washrooms at the park were given a fresh coat of paint before the opening of the camping season this spring.

The building also features a courtyard, adjoining the future new canteen set to open in 2026, with the Mini Golf course and beer gardens set to be moved to the same area.

Extreme heat expected for remainder of week in southern Manitoba

Extreme heat is expected for southern Manitoba, including the City of Winnipeg in the coming days. 

At 3:17 p.m. on July 2, Environment Canada issued a heat warning for southern Manitoba. 

"A hot and humid air mass will move into southern Manitoba on Thursday with the most humid weather of the summer so far expected by Friday," the warning read. 

Relief is expected to come by Saturday as a cold front tracks through the province on Friday night.

Residents are reminded to drink water and keep blinds closed to help beat the heat. 

Local rock group rocks the stage in Strathmore

There were several performers at Kinsmen Park in Strathmore for the Canada Day celebrations.

Headlining the performances was In/Vertigo, a rock and roll band based out of Calgary. The group was first formed over nine years ago.

"Strathmore's a good time. We're here every year for an event at Origin Brewing," said bassist Duncan McCartney. "Everybody is a little loosey-goosey and having a good time. It's a great place."

The seating at Kinsmen Park was packed for their set, which included iconic hits from bands such as Guns N' Roses.

New citizen celebrates on Canada Day

Canada Day represented a new milestone for Sandy Salcedo Delgado, as friends and family gathered to celebrate her recent achievement of officially becoming a Canadian citizen.

She notes that it has been a long time coming.

"I moved here from Tepic, Mexico, and that was back in 2010. So, it will be 15 years on July 9."

She says that having a party with her church and friends in the area made it especially enjoyable.

Heat warning issued as humidex nears 40 in Portage and area

Southern Manitoba is heading into its hottest stretch of the summer so far, with humidex values expected to reach a sweltering 40 degrees by Friday, prompting a heat warning across the region.

Environment Canada says a hot and humid air mass will settle over the area beginning on Thursday, making for uncomfortable and potentially dangerous conditions. Relief is expected late Friday night as a cold front moves through, bringing slightly cooler and less humid weather by Saturday.

Alberta names provincial police force, appoints former Calgary officer as first chief

Alberta's government has named its own provincial police force and announced its first chief.

Premier Danielle Smith says former deputy Calgary police chief Sat Parhar has been tapped to lead the new force, which the province will call the Alberta Sheriffs Police Service. 

Parhar retired in 2019 after more than two decades with the Calgary Police Service in a variety of roles.
