Southwest man jailed for a year for child pornography

A local man is set to spend the next year behind bars and the next two decades on a registry after his recent sentencing earlier this week on a charge stemming from child pornography seized in 2023. 

Maple Creek's Kiyomichi Nakanishi pleaded guilty to one count of possession of child pornography in Swift Current Provincial Court on Tuesday.

Herbert Fire Department raising money through 50/50

The Herbert Fire Department is raising money with a 50/50 raffle. 

People can purchase their tickets at the Herbert Pioneer Co-op location, the Herbert Town Office, and request them from any Herbert fire Department Member. Tickets are just $10 each. 

Brad Cornelson, fire chief for the Herbert Fire Department, is happy to be able to host this raffle again for the first time in many years.

"It's been a few years," said Cornelson. "It's going back into the fire department for things like equipment and tools."

Saskatchewan offers grants to support suicide prevention initiatives

The Saskatchewan government is providing $250,000 in grants to support community-based suicide prevention initiatives across the province.

The funding, part of Pillars for Life: The Saskatchewan Suicide Prevention Plan, is aimed at encouraging creative approaches to suicide prevention, including leadership development, risk reduction, increasing awareness of available resources, reducing stigma, and promoting healthy lifestyles.

Return to pre-outage prices slow, but steady, says petroleum analyst

Pick says harvest is going well this year, with strong yields and good progress. “Ah, pretty good. Good yields and we're making progress,” he shared. The warm, dry weather has helped the family push through their crops, particularly durum. “Absolutely, it has. It's let us get through a whole slack load of Durham,” he added.

Farmers urged to follow harvest safety tips, following baler fire in Vulcan County

Vulcan County Regional Fire Services responded to a baler fire that quickly spread into a grass fire on Tuesday (Sept. 9).  

Fire crews from Stations 19, 20, 21, and 27 responded to the fire, which was threatening nearby structures.  

No structures in the area were heavily damaged due to the quick response from emergency crews.   

RCMP investigating hit-and-run collision that left man seriously injured

Saskatchewan RCMP are investigating after a man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run on Mosquito Grizzly Bear’s Head Lean Man First Nation earlier this week.

Police say officers responded to a call around 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 8 about a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.

RCMP, local EMS and STARS air ambulance attended the scene, where an adult male was found with serious injuries. He was transported to hospital by STARS.

The vehicle, described as a white SUV, did not remain at the scene.

No major staffing increases at new South Hill school, admin staff halved: PSSD

With the new joint-use school opening up on South Hill, Prairie South School Division has confirmed that while the new school doesn’t have more staff than the two it is replacing, it is a “more unified team”. 

When prompted, PSSD Director of Education Ryan Boughen, acknowledged a reduction in administrative staff from four to two during the transition but didn’t provide provide specific numbers regarding teachers and support staff.
