Firefighters rescue 1 person from house fire

One person was taken to hospital following a house fire in Winnipeg's North End Thursday evening.

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was called to a one-and-a-half-storey home in the 800 block of Boyd Avenue at 6:46 p.m. after reports of smoke coming from the residence.

Firefighters launched an interior attack and brought the blaze under control by 7:03 p.m.

One resident was evacuated by firefighters and taken to hospital in stable condition, the city said in a release. No other injuries were reported.

The East Central 18UAAA Red Sox edge Giants in Thursday night pitchers' duel

The East Central 18UAAA Red Sox were more than a handful for the Saskatoon Giants last night at James Korte Field in Muenster. 

The 3-1 win was in part thanks to a 10 strike out, rock solid performance by Taylor Coleman on the mound. Coleman gave up only five hits and one run over his six inning stand.  

More rain would be welcomed by local producers

A combination of warm and wet growing conditions has allowed crops to develop nicely around the Humboldt area according to the latest Crop Report from the Ministry of Agriculture, but producers have noted some uneven crop staging which is making fungicide timing difficult. Many producers are applying fungicides to crops given the recent environmental conditions. 

Environment Canada issues Air Quality Warning for southeastern Manitoba

Environment Canada issued an Air Quality Warning Friday morning for all of southeastern Manitoba.

Wildfire smoke from northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan will be drifting across the province for the next several days. 

Local smoke is causing poor air quality and reduced visibility. Motorists are asked to ensure their driving lights are on. 

During heavy smoke conditions, everyone's health is at risk regardless of their age or health status. 

You are encouraged to limit time outdoors. Reschedule or cancel outdoor sports, activities and events.

Mobility meets nature: Peace Garden welcomes visitors with adaptive chair Access

The International Peace Garden (IPG) will have two adaptive chairs available for use on July 13, August 9 and Sept. 11 from 9 AM to 5 PM.

The motorized chairs run on tracks that allow them to move easily over varied terrain. Visitors with limited mobility are welcome to use the chairs for one-hour intervals to explore the garden with friends and family.

Carnduff RCMP make two arrests in case of vehicle theft from Weyburn

Carnduff RCMP have arrested two suspects connected with the theft of a vehicle from Alida earlier this month.

On July 6, Carnduff RCMP received a report of a vehicle in Alida that matched the description of a truck believed to be stolen from Weyburn.

When officers responded, they located the vehicle on 1st Street East in Alida with two individuals inside. Officers determined the vehicle was stolen and the driver was in breach of a release order. A 35-year-old male and a 38-year-old female were arrested at the scene.

Leader RCMP find break-in tools, stolen IDs during highway stop

RCMP say a woman is facing several charges after officers pulled over a vehicle near Lancer, Sask., earlier this week as part of an ongoing break-and-enter investigation.

Leader RCMP stopped the vehicle on Highway 32 on July 9 and arrested an adult woman at the scene.

Police say a search of the vehicle turned up multiple documents and credit cards belonging to people from several communities in southern Saskatchewan, including Moose Jaw, Parkbeg, Marquis, Tompkins, Liberty, Holdfast and Webb.

Officers also seized ammunition and break-in tools.

Highway projects finishing up into the weekend

One minor highway construction project wrapped up on Thursday, with another two weeklong jobs set to wrap up on Friday.

One of two projects on Highway 44, traffic was reduced to a single lane with a pilot vehicle in attendance from 12-5 on Thursday. General construction was taking place with fresh oil and loose stones providing hazards and flag people on hand for caution purposes.

Now today similar work is being completed on Highway 4, both directions near Highway 751 near Elrose. That project started Monday and is expected to wrap by the end of today.

Free Fishing Weekend starts Saturday to open up angling for everyone

Residents of Saskatchewan will soon have the opportunity to try out angling as the province has a Free Fishing Weekend from July 12-13. The weekend lets people fish with no need for a fishing license over the weekend.
