Spring pet portraits to support local animal shelter

Pet owners are invited to celebrate the much-anticipated arrival of spring, with a drop-in pet portrait photo session.  

These special portraits will not only give pet parents a keepsake to look back on, but are also supporting local animal shelter, Saving Grace Animal Society. 

The photoshoot will feature spring backgrounds, and multiple Easter-themed props for a donation. 

Red Deer Polytechnic showcases innovative research

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) recognized its culture of creative activity and research by hosting the third annual Research Showcase on March 13. 

This year, the showcase featured 53 poster displays and presentations about diverse subjects, and two concurrent sessions, which included topics in science, technology, humanities and the skilled trades. 

Many projects involved collaboration between students, faculty and partners. 

Generals win in OT to take game-one of Vanberg Cup Finals

If fans were looking for offence in game-one of the Vanberg Cup Finals, then they were at the right place Friday night in Lacombe.

The Lacombe Generals defeated the Devon Barons 7-6 to take a lead in their best-of-seven series.

Devon started the scoring in the first period which would eventually have five different goal scorers. Scoring for Lacombe were Thomas Beretta, Taylor Mulder, and Colin Zimmer.

MEGlobal celebrates International Women’s Day with donation to Blackfalds program

To celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, MEGlobal Canada ULC donated $5,000 to the Blackfalds Beyond Food Hub’s Changing the Cycle program.  

The program provides no-cost feminine hygiene products to those experiencing income disparity.  

The donation will be used to support the program’s mission of giving Blackfalds residents access to sustainable solutions. 

Prairie Agriculture Ministers concerned over 'Product of USA' Labeling

The recent release of the final ‘Product of USA’ voluntary labelling regulations for meat, poultry and egg products is raising concerns on this side of the border.

Canada is concerned it could lead to unfair trading practices and discrimination.

Agriculture Ministers Kostyshyn, Marit and Sigurdson all released statements following the news this week.

Manitoba's Ron Kostyshyn says the government is concerned that this final rule discounts our long-standing and positive trade relationship that benefits Manitoba producers and consumers.

This week is Canadian Agricultural Safety Week!

This year's theme is Your Farm, Your Family, Your Success: Safety is our Heritage.

Agriculture is considered by many to be one of the most dangerous occupations.

That's because farms and ranches are not just worksites, but places where producers live with their families, young children and seniors.

Stats show that from 2011 to 2020 Canada recorded 624 agriculture-related fatalities 58 per cent of those killed were farm operators while 11 per cent were their children.

Doctors urge myth-busting, education to counter misinformation as measles cases rise

A troubling rise in measles cases has a Toronto doctor remembering a little girl who became blind, noncommunicative and incontinent after contracting the virus.

Dr. Barry Goldlist was a medical student in 1973 when he saw the child, who was about 10, at the Hospital for Sick Children. She had developed subacute sclerosing panencephalitis, or SSPE, a rare and fatal nervous system disease that typically strikes those who were infected with measles before their second birthday.

Penhold blood drive to honour Guinness World Record holder a success

The Town of Penhold challenged Central Albertans to donate blood at the Canadian Blood Services Donation Centre in Red Deer throughout February.   

The Penhold Cares Blood Donation Campaign began in honor of resident Josephine Michaluk, who is currently the world record holder of the Most Whole Blood Donations (female).  

Over the last five decades, Michaluk has continued to give blood as often as she could.
