Fine issued for Airdrie business following 2023 investigation; Animal Protection Act charge stayed
A woman has been fined $500 for operating a business without a valid licence at an Airdrie facility. A second charge under Alberta’s Animal Protection Act, laid during the same investigation, has been stayed.
According to the Better Business Bureau, Trina Ann Demeria is listed as the owner of Dog E Daycare, a business operating at 69 East Lake Crescent N.E. Multiple dogs were seized from the facility in December 2023 during an enforcement operation that also involved the EJ Rescue Foundation.
Inclusive sports jamboree brings 128 students to Genesis Place in Airdrie
A full day of inclusive sports brought 128 Rocky View Schools (RVS) students to Genesis Place on April 30 for the division's Unified Sports Jamboree — a partnered event with Special Olympics Alberta designed to promote social inclusion through sport.
The jamboree joined people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. Each athlete was paired with a neurotypical student from their school who was the same age. These teams worked together throughout the day as they played several inclusive sports.
Defence in hockey players' trial suggests complainant wanted 'wild night' with group
Defence lawyers for one of five hockey players accused of sexual assault suggested Tuesday the complainant asked him to call other players into a hotel room in June 2018 and later urged them to have sex with her.
David Humphrey, who represents Michael McLeod, suggested during cross-examination that the woman wanted to keep the night going after having sex with McLeod and told him to have some of his friends come to the London, Ont., hotel room "to have some fun" because she wanted a "wild night."
Emergency alert test cancelled in Alberta due to wildfire threat
A provincewide emergency alert test planned for 1:55 p.m. Wednesday has been cancelled due to wildfire activity, according to Alert Ready. The national alerting agency posted on its X account just after 8 a.m., stating Alberta had called off the test "due to ongoing wildfires in some parts of the province."

Airdronians looking ahead to the May long weekend are facing conflicting signals from long-range forecasts, with three national sources offering different pictures of what’s to come — and even sharper disagreements about the summer.
The Farmers' Almanac forecasts "generally fair skies initially" from May 16 to 19, but adds that "some rain mars Victoria Day festivities for Alberta [and the] Prairies." It projects "clearing skies" and "pleasant weather" beginning May 20 and continuing eastward through Manitoba by midweek.
Alberta Premier's chief of staff defends business class flight from Trump visit
The chief of staff to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is defending a business class flight he charged to taxpayers, citing a health condition that increases his risk of blood clots.
The flight in question was a return flight he took from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Calgary earlier this year when he accompanied Smith to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump.
The CBC reported this week that the two-day stop in Florida for Smith, Anderson and two others cost Alberta taxpayers about $10,000, with Anderson's flight home billed at nearly $3,000 alone.
Volunteer Airdrie tackles QEII cleanup
It was a warm and busy Saturday morning for Volunteer Airdrie as they cleaned up the ditches along the QEII within Airdrie.
Saturday was the organization's annual highway cleanup. The goal was to go from Airdrie's north city limits to the Balzac Overpass, but according to Naomi Slipp, the executive director of Volunteer Airdrie, they were unable to do that.
School designations set for Vantage Rise and Goldwyn
At the latest Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees meeting, the trustees designated which schools students in two new communities will be attending.
The two communities include Vantage Rise in Airdrie and Goldwyn in Rocky View County, just south of Airdrie.
"Students moving into two new communities in Airdrie and Rocky View County are anticipated to begin attending RVS schools in 2025/26," stated RVS.

Longtime bus driver honoured by Chinook's Edge
Chinook's Edge School Division is highlighting a bus driver who has safely been delivering students to and from school for almost 50 years.
Jim Bowhay has been a school bus driver in the Sundre area, on and off again, since 1977.
“I graduated from high school in June that year, and a neighbour suggested I get a license and become a spare bus driver,” says Bowhay. “I started driving when I was 18 years old and one month. Some of the students on the bus were older than me. Now I am driving some of the children of students I used to drive.”
