Start of summer means start of U-pick season

Berry lovers will be happy to hear that the U-pick season has now started. 

Across the Prairies, strawberry U-pick seasons typically start in early July. Raspberries and Saskatoons are then often available from late July through August. 

Andy Loewen is the owner of Friedensfeld Honey and Berry Farm, located east of Friedensfeld in Manitoba. He says their strawberry U-pick season officially got underway on Friday. An opening day of June 27th is a little bit earlier than normal for their farm.

SARM wraps up provincewide tour with 2025 June Division Meetings

The Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) has concluded its 2025 June Division Meetings after covering more than 2,200 kilometres and visiting all six divisions across the province.

From June 16 to 19, SARM leadership and staff met with municipal representatives in North Battleford, Langham, Moose Jaw, Swift Current, Kipling and Kelvington. The annual tour gave rural leaders a chance to raise concerns, share solutions and hear updates directly from SARM.

RCMP and conservation officers team up to enforce boating safety

With the summer season having officially begun and Canada Day festivities upcoming, many people will be making their way to local lakes and launching their boats to enjoy the sunshine on the water. However, there are a few rules and regulations boat operators should keep in mind.  

The Saskatchewan RCMP issued a release yesterday reminding boaters that impaired boating is punishable under the Criminal Code of Canada and carry the same penalties as impaired drivers. This includes loss of license, hefty fines, and even jail time.  

SaskPower union says stress lifted as coal plants will operate past 2030

Saskatchewan coal power plants have their workers buzzing with excitement now that the province has confirmed they'll be extending the plants' lifetimes past 2030. Despite a federal initiative to close those by 2030, the provincial government stated in a letter to SaskPower employees that coal power would remain a segment of Saskatchewan's power production strategy into the future.

Healthy Beaches program returns to Saskatchewan this week

The Healthy Beaches program has restarted this week in Saskatchewan, with water sampling underway at select local beaches. Results are expected later this week, allowing residents to check water quality before heading out.

The program monitors water quality at recreational beaches across the province, providing accurate information to help protect beachgoers and ensure a safe, enjoyable experience.

Sights and sounds from the 2025 Summer Sizzler Kickoff Concert

For the most part, the rain held off on Thursday night as another edition of the Summer Sizzler got underway at Civic Park. Many residents brought their lawn chairs and enjoyed a night of music featuring local talent including Jodie Hergott, Brian Grest, Ray Whitton, Walter Bushman, Dave Tomchysen and more. 

Along with the music, there was a fundraising barbecue with the proceeds going towards Arts Humboldt.

Maier replaces Harris as Roughriders starting quarterback against the BC Lions

It could be a battle of the backup quarterbacks this week between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the BC Lions at Mosaic Stadium.  

Saskatchewan will turn to Jake Maier as the starting quarterback on Saturday for the first time since acquiring the 28-year-old from the Calgary Stampeders. Trevor Harris will miss this week’s game (Head/Illness).  

Royals fall to 9-2 following River Pirates late rally

The Marysburg Royals suffered a rare loss on Thursday night as the Saskatoon River Pirates staged a late rally to edge out the Royals 7-6.  

Marysburg held a slim 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning before the River Pirates scored a pair of runs to complete the comeback. 

It was a back-and-forth game between the two squads, with Saskatoon opening with a two-run lead at the bottom of the first inning. 

Manitou Beach Busking Festival opens with the musical teamup of two favourites

It’s officially summer at Manitou Beach! 

So said Mayor Cheryl Hanson as she welcomed a capacity crowd to Manitou Springs Terrace for the opening concert of the Manitou Beach Busking Festival. 

On stage were Manitou Beach mainstay performing “brothers,” Brian Paul DG and Bruce Rawling, backed with the solid bass undertow of Hank “Butterdish.”
