Museum to honour Chinese Canadian troops who fought in war and for citizenship rights

Former B.C. judge Randall (Bud) Wong remembers getting out of bed early one morning when he was five to greet his uncle at the train station in Vancouver at the end of the Second World War in 1945.

His uncle Delbert Yen Chow was returning from India after years of service as an infantryman.

“I remember very vividly my uncle coming off the train, and he was wearing his army uniform and knapsack,” said Wong, 83. 

“We were so happy to see him that we took him home, and then he came to live with us.”

Canadian Army veterans traumatized from service connect with horses in therapy

Canadian Army veterans are healing their psychological wounds with some help from equine friends.

Since starting equine therapy last June, Christian has regularly visited Mirabel's Equi-Sens stable, about 33 kilometres north of Montreal, to see the horse that has helped him “to be at peace.”

Decorated Swift Current D-Day veteran remembered

Among the Swift Current residents who served in the military, one local D-Day veteran played a significant role and was even awarded the Meritorious Service Award with the Palm Leaf.

Hewitt Murch joined the Canadian Army in 1942, during the height of World War II, serving with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Second Canadian Armoured Brigade.

Murch, born in 1921,  was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 for over 64 years and following his military career, volunteered with an array of groups and organizations. 

Swift Current to pay respects & recognize Remembrance Day

Tomorrow is Remembrance Day, a day recognized each year in honour of all of the veterans who've served. 

This Monday, November 11, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56 plans to hold two Remembrance Day ceremonies, one at the Cenotaph and the other at the Comp.

John Griffin, public relations officer for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 56, noted that the format will be similar to previous years and the ceremony at the school will also be livestreamed for those who can't attend in person. 

Swift Current Gulf veteran shares his story

A local Gulf veteran is sharing his story in honour of Remembrance Day, for those that weren't able to return home, and everyone who served their country.

Corporal Andy Keys served in the British military for 15 years during the Cold War era in the Royal Engineer Regiment, supporting the frontlines during the First Gulf War.

Keys' military career began in 1980 when he walked into the recruitment office on his 16th birthday, it wasn't long before he became a boy soldier and was sent to Germany with his first unit.

Fallen Swift Current peacekeepers' legacy forges on

A fallen peacekeeper from Swift Current is one of the many Canadian veterans whose legacy is carried on by a national website.

Last year the Royal Canadian Legion launched poppystories.ca encouraging the public to scan their poppies to uncover a story about fallen Canadian soldiers.

Keith Bradley Mirau, born on Oct. 19, 1944, in Swift Current, is one of the many figures who stand out in Canada's military history.

Legionnaires maul Bears with offensive prowess

The Swift Current Home Hardware Legionnaires put on an offensive clinic Sunday night as they steamrolled the Estevan Bears en route to their ninth win in their last 10 games.

Swift Current scored five times in the second period and twice in the first and third to run over the Bears 9-0 at the InnovationPlex in Saskatchewan Male AAA Hockey League action. Legionnaires forward Mason Fauser scored two goals and had two assists, defenceman Will Kirwan notched four assists, and goalie Cade Mitchell made 30 saves for his first career shutout.

'I was called;' Murray Sinclair's life and legacy honoured at emotional memorial

Applause erupted over and over at the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg Sunday as the son of Murray Sinclair, a former judge, senator and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission into residential schools, spoke about his father.

Niigaan Sinclair said his dad "was a first" in every room he walked into.

"It was impossible to go through a mall without 17 people, two of them he'd sentenced to jail at one point, coming up to him and saying how much they appreciated him," Niigaan Sinclair said.
