Chrétien predicts a Liberal majority win on Monday as leaders blitz key ridings

Former prime minister Jean Chrétien predicted the Liberals will win a majority government on Monday, as party leaders blitzed key ridings in Ontario and British Columbia hoping to swing last minute votes their way.

At a rally for Ottawa Centre Liberal incumbent Yasir Naqvi, Chrétien said he expects "to celebrate the majority government of the Liberal party" after polls close Monday night.

"Monday is going to be a Liberal sunshine," he said, drawing cheers.

Vancouver is waking to the tragic aftermath of a deadly ramming attack on a Filipino community street festival that killed at least nine people, with survivors describing horrifying scenes of victims strewn on the ground.

Interim Vancouver Police Chief Steve Rai says a 30-year-old Vancouver man has been arrested for Saturday night's attack in which an SUV plowed through a crowded South Vancouver street at high speed.

Kinsmen Lake stocked with over 1,500 trout

Kinsmen Lake is now stocked with 1,500 rainbow trout.

The fish were delivered by Smoky Trout Farm as part of the province's recreational fish stocking program.

Fish have been delivered to Kinsmen Lake since the late 60s, with the fish stocking program using over 2.1 million trout at 240 lakes across the province.

"We’ve referred to the storm pond by many names: Kinsmen Lake, Lambert Lake, Strathmore Children’s Pond, even Strathmore Town Lake," wrote the town on social media. "No matter what you call it, it’s been part of our community’s outdoor life for decades."

Leaders echo messages in final push to election day

Federal party leaders hit the hustings Friday with election day fast approaching, as Mark Carney of the Liberals focused on U.S. tariff threats in a steel town and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre campaigned on his anti-crime platform in Saskatoon.

Canadians cast ballots to choose their next government on Monday.

The Liberals are widely seen to be leading in the polls, with the Conservatives in second place and the Bloc Québécois, NDP and Greens trailing behind.

Canadian delegation among thousands of mourners attending Pope Francis's funeral

Canadians scattered among the tens of thousands in and around St. Peter's Square for the funeral of Pope Francis described the ceremony as profoundly beautiful. 

While dignitaries such as Gov.-Gen. Mary Simon were seated near the front of the square, members of the general public were positioned farther back or gathered in the streets of Rome to watch on large screens.

Falguni Debnath says being at the back of the square didn't dampen the effect of the familiar ritual.

Strathmore lacrosse player gearing up for Canada Summer Games

Katie Richardson, a U15A lacrosse player with HOKs, is heading to nationals in August.

After a series of trials, Richardson secured her spot at the Canada Summer Games in Halifax as part of the Lacrosse Canada National Championships between August 11 and 15.

"If you make the first round, then you go to the second round in Red Deer. If you make it, you get a phone call," said Richardson.

The Strathmore-based player has been in the game for eight years and said that her favourite part of the game is the teammates.

"They're really welcoming to me playing."

Over 20,000 Bow River residents cast advance ballots

Over the Easter long weekend, over 7.3 million Canadians voted in advance for the upcoming federal election.

During the 2021 election, only 5.1 million Canadians took advantage of advance voting.

In the Bow River riding this year, 21,974 residents voted.

The last chance to vote will be on Monday, April 28.

Calgary company pleads guilty to E. coli outbreak

Fueling Minds Inc., a Calgary-based company, has put in a guilty plea following an E. coli outbreak at several daycares in the city.

The charges stem from an eight-week E. coli outbreak that began in September 2023. According to the court, hundreds of Calgarians got sick, with 38 children being placed in hospital.

A report by Alberta Health Services claimed that almost 450 infections could be traced back to meatloaf prepared by Fueling Minds.

During the outbreak, the company served 250 child-care workers and 1,300 attendees.

Survey flags popping up around Strathmore: town explains

There have been survey flags showing up all across Strathmore lately, and the town is explaining why.

In a social media post made on Thursday, April 24, the town explained the reasons that survey flags are placed.

"They might mark utility lines, property boundaries, future construction sites, or other underground infrastructure," wrote the town. "That said, not all flags mean something major is happening. It could also just be kids setting up a creative racetrack in their yard."
