Over 20,000 Bow River residents cast advance ballots

Over the Easter long weekend, over 7.3 million Canadians voted in advance for the upcoming federal election.

During the 2021 election, only 5.1 million Canadians took advantage of advance voting.

In the Bow River riding this year, 21,974 residents voted.

The last chance to vote will be on Monday, April 28.

Calgary company pleads guilty to E. coli outbreak

Fueling Minds Inc., a Calgary-based company, has put in a guilty plea following an E. coli outbreak at several daycares in the city.

The charges stem from an eight-week E. coli outbreak that began in September 2023. According to the court, hundreds of Calgarians got sick, with 38 children being placed in hospital.

A report by Alberta Health Services claimed that almost 450 infections could be traced back to meatloaf prepared by Fueling Minds.

During the outbreak, the company served 250 child-care workers and 1,300 attendees.

Survey flags popping up around Strathmore: town explains

There have been survey flags showing up all across Strathmore lately, and the town is explaining why.

In a social media post made on Thursday, April 24, the town explained the reasons that survey flags are placed.

"They might mark utility lines, property boundaries, future construction sites, or other underground infrastructure," wrote the town. "That said, not all flags mean something major is happening. It could also just be kids setting up a creative racetrack in their yard."

Calgary man wins $1M, tells wife through Snapchat

A Calgary man used a social media app to tell his wife about him winning $1,000,000 in the lottery.

Lovepreet Singh was filling up for gas when he decided to check a Lotto 6-49 ticket he bought at the Circle K on Coral Springs Boulevard N.E.

After he won, he sent his wife a video on Snapchat to let her know about the winnings.

“She was shouting on the stairs when I got home,” said Lovepreet in a news release. “She was completely surprised and so excited.”

Singh will be using the money to purchase a house.

Seed treatments can play an important role against disease, helping to give the newly emerging crop a better start.

Dr. Kelly Turkington, a plant pathologist at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in Lacombe says seed treatments can effectively control seed-borne diseases such as Fusarium, spot blotch pathogens in cereals, and loose smut in barley. 

Fish and Wildlife investigate alleged poaching near Strathmore

Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement are looking for information surrounding an alleged poaching incident that happened near Strathmore on December 28, 2024.

Officers say that they responded to reports near Namaka Lake of someone firing a gun within 40 metres of a home. Alberta Fish and Wildlife believe the suspects were shooting at game birds in an adjacent field from the home.

When the suspects were confronted by a neighbour, they sped away from the scene. Officers believe that two people were inside the suspect vehicle at the time of the incident.

Singer Jordan Ostrom chats band Sykamore on Monday's morning show

On Monday, April 28, we are chatting with local musician Jordan Ostrom from the band Sykamore.

Ostrom grew up on a farm near Carseland and will share her story of how she got into the music business.

She'll also talk how she gets over stage fright, how she writes her songs, and will tell us her journey of moving to Nashville.

Spartans rugby heading to tournament in Calgary

The Strathmore Spartans senior boy's rugby team began their season a week ago.

Their next game takes place on Saturday, April 26, for the Icebreaker Tournament in Calgary.

"It's run by the Calgary Irish Rugby Association, and they started it a few years ago," said head coach Curtis Reid. "It's a way for teams early in the season to play some rugby."

The tournament is with teams of 15, an increase over the standard team of seven.

"It's a good way to mix up some lineups, and you get to preview other teams around the area."

Smile Cookie campaign returns to Strathmore with all donations going to local charity

The Smile Cookie campaign is coming back to Strathmore.

The campaign will run from April 28 to May 4.

Kevin Korpi is the owner of the Strathmore and Langdon Tim Horton's locations, and he explained what the Smile Cookie campaign is.

"It's a campaign where what we do at Tim Horton's is we bake chocolate chunk cookies, and we decorate them with them with a smile, and then we sell them and give all the money to charity."

This year, all the funds from the campaign will go towards Strathmore Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).
