Extreme cold to hit Strathmore overnight

A second extreme cold warning this week has been issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

The warning was released as extremely cold wind chill values near -40°C are expected overnight and into Wednesday (Feb. 12) during the morning.

"Wind chill values will moderate through the daytime hours, but extremely cold wind chill values could return overnight and Thursday morning for parts of Alberta," wrote ECCC.

Several scams impersonating Peavey Mart have been popping up just weeks after the hardware store chain announced its closure.

In a post made to Peavey Mart's Facebook page the chain warned customers about social media profiles and websites claiming to be the store.

"Please be cautious and verify sources before engaging with any online offers. If a website is not peaveymart.com, it is not our website," wrote the chain. "Similarly, if a social media page does not carry the verified 'Peavey Mart' name and checkmark, it is not affiliated with us."

The City of Chestermere wants residents to voice their opinions on secondary suites and short-term rentals.

“Secondary suite means a self-contained, secondary dwelling Unit that is located within the principle dwelling Unit, where both dwelling units are registered under the same land title; contains a kitchen, living, sleeping and sanitary facilities and is used or designed to be used as a residence by one or more persons; and that is secondary to the main residential use on the parcel," said the city in a news release.

Strathmore hailstorm insurance costs continue to skyrocket

Despite happening over half a year ago, the hailstorm that hit Calgary back in August continues to rack up costs.

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) the total insured losses is now estimated to be around $3.25 billion, a rise from the $2.8 billion reported in January.

"The storm is the second-costliest disaster in Canadian history for insured losses and resulted in more than 130,000 insurance claims," wrote IBC in a news release.

It's been a little while since longtime Bow River MP Martin Sheilds announced that he would not run for re-election.

Sheilds has been the MP pf the riding since 2015 and was a member of the Conservative Party.

Historically Bow River has been a stronghold for the Conservatives where in the past three elections they have received over 69 per cent of the vote.

ALERT arrests fentanyl dealer in nearby community

Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) arrested a Calgary fentanyl dealer earlier this month.

Police said the arrest was made on February 6 outside of an apartment in the Beltline area. As officers searched the home, they seized more than a kilogram and a half of fentanyl.

According to ALERT, they also found 49 grams of suspected benzodiazepine and over $17,000 in cash.

There have been reports of discoloured water in Lakes of Muirfield near Strathmore.

"This is due to higher manganese levels from the recent cold snap. Our water operators have increased chlorine levels to resolve the issue. While the water is safe to drink, you may notice a grey tinge or a chlorine smell," mentioned Wheatland County in a news release.

⁣Staff with the county are encouraging residents to call Rocky View Utility Corp at 403-999-9127 if they continue to experience discolouration or notice an odour in the water.

'Our nation can make its own choices': Siksika Nation pursues treaty rights lawsuit

Siksika Nation is looking to remove itself from a class action lawsuit started by members of the Bearspaw First Nation.

Late last year Bearspaw started the suit over treaty annuities which they said is for all Treaty 7 nations.

"Siksika Nation started its own treaty annuities litigation in September 2023. The litigation alleges that Canada’s failure to adjust the $5 annuity payment for inflation is a breach of its obligations under the Treaty. Since 1877, Canada has always paid $5 per year to each member, mentioned Siksika in a news release.

Alberta's Smith to join premiers in Washington amid U.S. tariff threats

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is travelling back to Washington, D.C., this week, along with her provincial counterparts, to lobby U.S. lawmakers and industry players amid continued tariff threats.

Smith confirmed the trip in a Monday news release, saying she will embrace a "Team Canada approach" to convince Americans the levies would harm workers and businesses on both sides of the border. She also plans to continue highlighting the "significant" role Alberta energy exports play in helping the U.S.

Trudeau says Canada will push back on U.S. tariffs with Trump administration

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says Ottawa will work to convince U.S. President Donald Trump that his steel and aluminum tariffs will hurt both countries.

A senior government official said Tuesday that Trudeau spoke with U.S. Vice-President JD Vance about the impact steel tariffs would have in Ohio, which Vance previously represented in the U.S. Senate.

Trump signed an executive order Monday to implement 25 per cent tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States, beginning March 12.

Trudeau and Vance are both in Paris for a global summit on AI.
