Canadian Navy sailor dead after a boat capsized in Bedford Basin
The Royal Canadian Navy says a sailor has died in the Bedford Basin after a boat capsized.
The Navy says two sailors were operating a rigid-hull inflatable boat in the Halifax-area bay when it overturned and capsized around 10 p.m. on Friday.
It says a rescue effort by the Joint Rescue and Coordination Centre Halifax dispatched two ships from the Canadian Coast Guard, and pulled both sailors from the water.
The Navy says the sailors were met by paramedics and transferred to a Halifax hospital, but one of the sailors could not be resuscitated.

A Calgary real estate report showed that Strathmore's housing prices continued to rise throughout 2024.
According to the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB), home prices averaged at $538,441 last year which was a 56 per cent increase from 2020.
"Declining new listings drove annual inventory levels to near-record lows, and lower levels of new home construction further constrained supply," mentioned CREB.
This is the second consecutive year that Strathmore experienced a slowdown in sales activity, causing the annual inventory levels to reach near-record lows.

Head coach Tim Colby says it's been impressive to watch the ice hockey team in Nairobi, Kenya, go from a few newbies to a large group that's received international recognition.

Cyberattack temporarily shuts down Strathmore hair salon
A hair salon in Strathmore was shut down for most of the week following a cyberattack.
Runway Hair Design's booking system was affected on Tuesday (Jan. 21), which led to the store being closed for the following days.
"We got an e-mail from Milano Software, and it said that they were informed of a ransomware attack targeting the salon and spa industry," said Joshua Neiszner, marketing coordinator at Runway Hair Design.
"That's basically all that we got from them. They kind of just left it up to us to deal with."
Derrick Ford talks about hitting top 5 in HJHL goalie stats
Derrick Ford, goalie for the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings Junior B hockey team, has been recognized as being the second-best goalie in the Heritage Junior Hockey League (HJHL).
Throughout the season, Ford has garnered a record of 13-4 with a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 2.01, along with four shutouts.
"It's been a lot of fun. There hasn't really been a whole lot of downs for us this year, and we've been a lot more consistent than most years," said Ford. "The defence is playing really well in front of me, and we're all playing as a team and having a lot of success."
Chestermere completes repairs on sound wall
The City of Chestermere has completed repair work on a sound wall located along Rainbow Road.
According to the city, the wall was damaged following a car crash in 2024, with the initial cost of repair estimated at around $73,000.
The city claimed that the sound wall was structurally unsound following the crash, which opened Chestermere to liability.
What road closures can Strathmore residents expect next week?
There is an upcoming road closure on 5 Avenue, between 3 Street and 4 Street in Strathmore.
Road crews will be repairing underground utilities starting Tuesday (Jan. 28) and will only allow local traffic through the area.
Tree pruning on Cambridge Glen Drive between Centennial Drive and Sagewood Care Centre will wrap up on Friday (Jan. 24).
RCMP issue Canada-wide warrant for man charged with sexually assaulting a minor
A Canada-wide warrant has been issued to find a man charged with sexually assaulting a minor and publishing the images.
According to an RCMP news release, 45-year-old Justin Radcliffe was arrested and charged on July 19, 2022.
Police say Radcliffe was released for court, but he failed to show up.
"RCMP are asking the public for assistance in locating Radcliffe who is known to frequent Kelowna and Falkland B.C. and Grande Prairie," added RCMP.
Try It Nite for square dancing back in Strathmore next week
Square dancing Try It Nite is returning to Strathmore on Wednesday (Jan. 29) at 7 p.m.
The Wheatland Whirlers group will meet at the Westmount School gym.
The dancing will range from all types of ages, and you can bring your partner or show up as a single participant.
The group dances to a variety of music and you can dress whichever way you want.
