Here's when school zones will come back into effect

It's almost that time of year again. 

School zones in Fort Saskatchewan will come back into effect early next week as classes for most students in both the Elk Island Public and Catholic school divisions will begin on Tuesday (Aug. 30).  

Once classes are in, school zones are in effect from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 

Like playground zones, which remain in effect all year, the speed limit in school zones is 30 km/hr. 

Artemis space mission to moon 'a stepping-stone' to Mars and beyond

The last time humans went to the moon, it was a destination.

But when NASA's Artemis 1 mission launches Monday, the moon will be more of a way station.

"It's really to learn how we can go further," said Isabelle Tremblay of the Canadian Space Agency, which is playing a big role in the Artemis missions. "It's really to learn how we can go to Mars."

Politicians condemn harassment of Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland

Current and former politicians from across the Canadian political spectrum have condemned an incident in Alberta during which a man appeared to verbally accost Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland on Friday.

A 14-second video posted on Twitter by an account that voices opposition to COVID-19 public health measures shows Freeland entering an elevator while a large man approaches her, hurling profanities and calling her a "traitor."

Man in critical condition after Sturgeon County shooting; RCMP looking for two suspects

Police are looking for two suspects after a shooting in Sturgeon County this morning.

At 2:30 a.m., Morinville RCMP received a 911 call about a shooting near Lily Lake Resort with one person in serious condition.

Police say a 30-year-old victim was taken to hospital by air ambulance with life-threatening injuries. 

"The condition of the victim at this time is unknown," Morinville RCMP said in their release.

Mounties asked residents to shelter in place as they pursued the suspects. Six hours later, the shelter in place was lifted.

Highway 15 pedestrian bridge expected to reopen in October

Repairs to the Highway 15 pedestrian bridge in Fort Saskatchewan may take longer than initially anticipated. 

According to city officials, the timeline initially announced for the bridges' reopening did not account for the curing time on the repair. Weather permitting, the bridge will reopen in four to six weeks after repairs begin on Sept. 6.

The bridge has been closed since a vehicle carrying a large load hit the structure on July 21, causing damage. The driver has since been located, but no charges have been laid.

Local kids selling lemonade for the Stollery Children's Hospital

If you're looking for a refreshing drink this weekend, look no further than the Squad Squeezers.

Lemonade Stand Day (Aug. 28) is a yearly event focused on helping raise money for the Stollery Children's Hospital. The Squad Squeezers, lead by the Nerbas and Kalyn families, have been raising money in Fort Saskatchewan for the last six years.

The Nerbas and Kalyn families have a personal relationship with the Stollery. Whitney Nerbas' son Jace was born with hydronephrosis and had his kidneys removed on his third birthday. 

Local athlete wins gold at 14U Western Canada Baseball Championship

Brooke Forslund came home with gold in the Western Canada Baseball Championship.

Forslund has played for the Sherwood Park Athletics for six years before she got a spot on the girls 14U Team Alberta. Her position on the team included third base, pitcher, and catcher.

For many of the girls, including Forslund, it was their first time in Winnipeg.

"It was a cool experience. I'd never been to a city like Winnipeg before," said Forslund. 

There were four teams in total; Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

Family rallies around 'supportive' parents killed in impaired crash

Family and friends are in the process of healing after both Jim, 68, and Annie, 63, MacDonald perished in a fatal motorcycle accident in Strathcona County. 

Their eldest son, Kyle MacDonald, says that the couple had a profound impact on the family. 

“Jim and Annie were a big part of the family,” said MacDonald. “They were always super supportive parents.”

Federal Minister announces funding to help prevent African swine fever outbreaks

Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of up to $45.3 million to enhance efforts to prevent African swine fever from entering Canada and prepare for a potential outbreak. 

ASF is a fatal swine disease that spreads through both direct and indirect contact with infected pigs, pork, and pork by-products. 

Bibeau said they'll need a collaborative approach to protect Canada’s pork industry and prevent its spread.
