Local athlete wins gold at 14U Western Canada Baseball Championship

Brooke Forslund came home with gold in the Western Canada Baseball Championship.

Forslund has played for the Sherwood Park Athletics for six years before she got a spot on the girls 14U Team Alberta. Her position on the team included third base, pitcher, and catcher.

For many of the girls, including Forslund, it was their first time in Winnipeg.

"It was a cool experience. I'd never been to a city like Winnipeg before," said Forslund. 

There were four teams in total; Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

Family rallies around 'supportive' parents killed in impaired crash

Family and friends are in the process of healing after both Jim, 68, and Annie, 63, MacDonald perished in a fatal motorcycle accident in Strathcona County. 

Their eldest son, Kyle MacDonald, says that the couple had a profound impact on the family. 

“Jim and Annie were a big part of the family,” said MacDonald. “They were always super supportive parents.”

Federal Minister announces funding to help prevent African swine fever outbreaks

Today, the Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, Marie-Claude Bibeau, announced an investment of up to $45.3 million to enhance efforts to prevent African swine fever from entering Canada and prepare for a potential outbreak. 

ASF is a fatal swine disease that spreads through both direct and indirect contact with infected pigs, pork, and pork by-products. 

Bibeau said they'll need a collaborative approach to protect Canada’s pork industry and prevent its spread.

Fort Sask Youth Council adds new member

The Fort Saskatchewan Youth Council grew to five members. 

14-year-old Ava Bendick is the newest member after being appointed at last Tuesday’s city council meeting in a unanimous vote. 

Bendick moved to the community about six years ago from Edmonton. 

"When I heard about the Youth Council from Kristie Wahl at the Youth Festival back in June I just felt like it was an opportunity to give back to the town that made me feel so welcome.” 

Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm to temporarily close following stop order

An attraction in Sturgeon County has temporarily closed after it was ordered to halt some of its operations.

In a post to social media on Thursday (Aug. 25), Prairie Gardens and Adventure Farm wrote it would close until Sept. 6 while it worked to "resolve the matter." 

"Due to new Sturgeon County regulations, we can only allow 100 people per day at our farm for small-scale consumer visits," wrote the farm. "This is unsustainable for our small farm." 

North Central Co-op takes over local Husky station

Fort Saskatchewan’s Husky gas station on Westpark Boulevard is set for a makeover after North Central Co-op announced it would be one of 25 Edmonton-area gas pumps they’d be taking over. 

The move, which also includes a station in Sherwood Park located at 28 Strathmoor Drive, was announced by Co-op on Thursday afternoon.

Co-op CEO Dean McKim says this is yet another step in the company’s investment in local communities. 

Many Canadian doctors struggle with burnout, depression and anxiety: survey

The well-being of physicians across Canada has significantly decreased with many doctors reporting poorer mental health than before the COVID-19 pandemic, a new survey suggests.

The Canadian Medical Association's national physician health survey, released Thursday, indicates that 53 per cent of respondents reported symptoms of burnout, including emotional exhaustion.

The reported burnout rate among doctors was 1.7 times higher than it was in the association's previous survey in 2017.

Russian 'architect' of Ukraine child abduction scheme sanctioned by Canada

Canada has sanctioned a Russian woman whom the foreign affairs minister's office alleges is the architect of a scheme to abduct thousands of Ukrainian children and facilitate their adoption into Russian homes. 

The federal government has imposed sanctions on Maria Lvova-Belova, Russia's children's rights commissioner, who has been accused by Ukraine of organizing the removal of children from the Luhansk and Donetsk regions.

Family calls out justice system on quick release of accused impaired driver

The family of Samantha Wylie has been left questioning why an accused impaired driver was quickly released without bail after a fatal collision.

Her children and their spouses say justice has failed them and are encouraging people to reach out to the MLAs to speak out to prevent it from happening to other people.
