A thunderstorm moved through Airdrie and Calgary on Monday, just ahead of the one-year anniversary of the August 2024 hailstorm that caused more than $3 billion in insured damage.

CBSA seizes 160 kg of cannabis at Calgary airport, commercial sites over past year

CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency) border services officers have seized more than 160 kilograms of cannabis over the past year at Calgary International Airport and Calgary Commercial operations. The majority was illicit and destined for export, with an estimated street value of more than $1.2 million.

In a July 23 news release, the Canada Border Services Agency said the seizures help disrupt organized crime that helps fund other illegal activities such as narcotics and weapons smuggling.

Young Albertans under most pressure in Canada to buy homes: Wahi

Young Canadians — especially those in Alberta — are facing more pressure to buy a home than previous generations, according to a July 24 news release from digital real estate platform Wahi.

Wahi’s 2025 Homebuying Pressure Point Survey, conducted in partnership with the Angus Reid Forum, found that 41 per cent of Albertans reported feeling pressure to purchase property — the highest rate in the country. That compares to 39 per cent in British Columbia, 29 per cent in Atlantic Canada, and 26 per cent in Quebec.

A New York Times bestseller is among several television projects shooting this summer and fall in Calgary and the area, according to ACTRA Alberta.

ACTRA Alberta is the provincial branch of the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists, the union representing professional performers in film, television and commercial productions.

Airdrie’s Ehrman invited to national U18 women’s hockey camp

An Airdrie athlete is among six Albertans invited to compete for a spot on Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team.

Alexis Ehrman received an invitation to attend the U18 selection camp, running August 6–9 at WinSport in Calgary. The camp features on- and off-ice sessions and three Red-White intrasquad games scheduled for August 7–9.

Ehrman is one of five Hockey Alberta alumni named to the selection camp roster, alongside Rowan Houweling (Edmonton), Ciara Lang (Sherwood Park), Madison Terry (Edmonton), and Tayla Lamabe (Sherwood Park).

A section of Highway 40 in Kananaskis Country remains closed Tuesday morning following a mudslide south of the Mount Lipsett Day Use Area.

Town of Crossfield bins bogus green bin pitch

In a Facebook post published Thursday, July 31, 2025, the Town of Crossfield said it has “received reports of an individual in the Harrison area going door-to-door claiming to represent the Town.”

“The individual is reportedly offering green bin deliveries in exchange for a $75 deposit taken by credit card.”

“The person is not affiliated with the Town of Crossfield, and there is currently no green bin program being offered.”

Calgary driver hit with roadside sanctions after 152 km/h Hwy 2 stop: RCMP

A Calgary driver was penalized under Alberta’s SafeRoads program after refusing roadside testing and being clocked at 152 kilometres per hour on Highway 2 southbound over the Heritage Day long weekend, according to RCMP.

Olds RCMP said in a Sunday Facebook post that the Immediate Roadside Sanctions included:

  • a 30-day vehicle seizure

  • a 90-day licence suspension

  • a $1,200 IRS fine

  • a $397 speeding ticket
