For two local women, prep came first — early mornings, missed meals, and months of silence few people ever see.

And when Crossfield’s Cheryl MacKimmie stepped on stage at the 2025 Alberta Open Bodybuilding Show held May 31 at the Red Deer Resort and Casino, it wasn’t for applause. It was to finish something.

Thijs Gordon Vogelzang, a Crossfield resident and former educational assistant previously employed by Rocky View Schools, was sentenced to 258 days in custody for possession of child pornography. With 168 days credited as time already served, he has 90 days remaining.

With daytime highs expected to reach 29 C by Thursday, spray park access may be in high demand. In Airdrie, the taps are already flowing. The Crossfield and Madden Food Bank was originally expecting 10,000 pounds of donated food after Crossfield’s Kraft Hockeyville run ended in April. What arrived on May 8 was more than double.

Kraft Heinz delivered 23,000 pounds of food — a 12-pallet shipment that food bank co-founder Cheryl Longeway called both overwhelming and sustaining.

Crossfield and Rocky View County staged a full-scale emergency simulation on Thursday, which was built around a mock tornado that damaged property, displaced livestock, and triggered a mass evacuation.

The May 8 exercise, mandated under Alberta's Emergency Management Act, unfolded across multiple locations and tested how agencies coordinate during a simulated regional disaster.

Fire crews from both the Town of Crossfield and the City of Airdrie responded to a structure fire Wednesday morning that destroyed one residence.

According to Crossfield town officials, a structure fire that was being attended by fire crews earlier this morning has been extinguished.

"Saskatchewan Street is now open to local traffic only (residents in the immediate area). A fire truck will remain on scene to monitor the site. Please be respectful of barricades surrounding the property," officials noted in a Wednesday afternoon update.

Earlier this morning, Crossfield fire crews were on the scene of a structure fire in town.
