20-hour incident in Calgary's downtown ended safely

Over 20 hours after an incident shut down several major roadways and bridges in Calgary's downtown core, police have said that it has been resolved peacefully. The Reconciliation Bridge, the Fourth Avenue flyover and the Fifth Avenue flyover have all been re-opened.

According to police, late Wednesday evening, they were called to the Reconciliation Bridge for reports of a man suffering from a mental health crisis who had climbed to the top of the bridge.

Update: Calgary Police update public on incident in downtown core

On Thursday evening, Calgary police said that a police incident that began late on Wednesday evening, had been resolved and access to the city's core had been restored.

Hours earlier, Calgary police stated that while the Fifth Avenue Flyover in the city's downtown has been re-opened, other closures remained, including a closure of the Reconciliation Bridge and the Fourth Avenue Flyover remain closed. 

Deteriorating highway conditions north of Airdrie

There are reports of several cars in the ditch north of Airdrie towards Disdbury on the QEII.

Motorists can expect blowing snow and icy wheel paths northbound on the QEII past Carstairs. However, road conditions southbound on the QEII, towards Calgary city limits are reported to still be in good condition.

Airdrie's local forecast is calling for a chance of flurries on Thursday, with two to four centimetres of snow possible. Flurries are also predicted for Friday during the day and periods of snow at night. 

Update: Calgary police release details on 'on-going' incident in downtown

On Thursday evening, Calgary police said that over 20 hours after an incident in the East Village began, the incident had been safely resolved. 

Earlier in the day, the Calgary Police's social media feed on Facebook, said that an ongoing incident in the downtown core was 'for a person experiencing a mental health crisis.'

Update: Downtown Calgary bridges shut down amid ongoing incident  

Due to an ongoing incident in the East Village area in Calgary, access to downtown will be significantly impacted today.

"Multiple bridges in the downtown area will be closed for emergency crews to work. There is no risk to the public at this time," a brief news release from The City of Calgary stated.

In a Thursday afternoon update, CPS stated that they were aware access to the downtown core continues to be significantly impacted.

Update: Reports of school bus in ditch near Airdrie; collisions also reported north of Airdrie

An incident involving a school bus that was previously reported to be in the ditch on the QEII, northbound, in the vicinity of the Stoney Trail turn-off and Balzac; has since been cleared. 

It appears that there were no students on board. Further north, a multi-vehicle collision northbound on the QEII, at the junction of Highway 27, near Olds has also been cleared. 

Mounties report 52 collisions in a single evening amid spring snow storm

Mounties are continuing to urge motorists to drive with extreme caution, as they responded to scores of collisions on Wednesday evening.

"Alberta RCMP were kept busy yesterday responding to collisions across the province. Police report that on the QE II between Edmonton and Calgary, RCMP responded to 52 collisions, three resulting in injuries," police stated on Thursday.
